Bunnies couldn't afford him, Eagles have cash and Luke Burgess already on the books..

The Eagles are desperate for quality forwards, would be a great fit

No Sea eagles are desperate for a whole new halves pairing

Let's see where you're at when that happens first

Totally agree, Lets see what's available in 2016 for halves.. Rather than the Eagles spending over 2 mil on two players. lets see if they can sign
some quality forwards and solids halves for that much.

We have seen the Roosters and Bunnies win with dominating forward packs

Manly Sea Eagles consider trying to tempt Sam Burgess back to the NRL
EXCLUSIVE DEAN RITCHIE THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH MARCH 15, 2015 12:00AM SHARE

The Sunday Telegraph can reveal the Sea Eagles have spoken internally about luring Burgess from England to Brookvale from next season. Talks have been informal but meaningful. And Manly have plenty of cash with Daly Cherry-Evans leaving for Gold Coast and Kieran Foran poised to walk away from Brookvale as well.

The Rabbitohs have first option on Burgess but would struggle to fit him under the salary cap. Burgess would be one of the best and biggest signings in Manly’s 68-year history. He is currently one season into a three-year deal with English rugby union club Bath. Burgess has what Manly desperately need — size and power upfront.

After releasing him early to rugby union, Souths have first option on Burgess but would have problems fitting him under the salary cap after signing forwards Glenn Stewart and Tim Grant plus upgrading and re-signing several grand final heroes. The odds are long but Burgess is wanted by Manly. Burgess, 26, may look at his options should he feel unfulfilled with his rugby union experiment.

Manly CEO Joe Kelly and Burgess are friends through the South Sydney connection, Burgess the star forward, Kelly the former Rabbitohs’ chief operating officer. Kelly has spoken with Burgess’ management team but denied it was specifically about the star forward. “If Sam was available and keen to come back to Australia, we would certainly have an interest in him,” Kelly told The Sunday Telegraph.

“We would like to open dialogue to tell him of the opportunities at Manly. “He was the world player of the year and won the Clive Churchill Medal last year.” Luke Burgess has already left the Rabbitohs for the Sea Eagles. Luke Burgess has already left the Rabbitohs for the Sea Eagles.

It is far too early for Manly fans to become excited about Burgess but the move shows that the club is serious about re-entering the market place with force. The club has $1 million to spend for 2016 through the departure of Cherry-Evans after this season. And that war chest may blow out to $2 million if Foran leaves for Parramatta, as is expected.

Foran’s four-year deal with the Eels is expected to be formally announced this week. The pursuit of Burgess shows Manly are ready to be intense and aggressive in boosting their playing roster. Manly won’t be caught flat-footed. Manly has endured a tough few weeks but chasing Burgess shows the famous is now ready to move forward.

Burgess left the NRL is historic and sensational circumstances last year. After fracturing his cheekbone in tackle one of the grand final against Canterbury, Burgess played on to famously lead his side to premiership glory. Burgess hopes to be selected in England’s squad to contest the World Cup, which starts in September.

Hey there's nothing wrong with it, but you did have a source & much better than the classic "I'm hearing" or "my mail is" or what Jubileeboy said " internal source".

Did you get a tip for a horse called Papa Nick ? ( or does that only happen on the New York Subway ? )

Every club would make a case for Sam Burgess when he is wants to come back.

Surprised that Manly's Kelly is responding to the story , suggests he and rest of Manly management are DESPERATE and CLUELESS. I thought they were making a play to keep count all their dollars for last ditch offers to Foran and DCE to get a reversal of their decisions by June 30? Now , we hear this .......is this part of their approach to try and keep DEC and FORAN by announcing that they are also in hunt for Sam B. Only problem , if they spend all their money to keep DEC/FORAN they will not have anything for SAM. which is it?

Meantime , Souths will have first call on Sam , given they had him on contract until end of 2016.
Sure that Souths could come up with a suitable deal , which may require releasing Stewart/GRant for starters . Would not expect Sam back before start 2016.

Also , if Sam is released early from his RU contract , expect that the RU would expect a transfer fee similar to the $1m they paid Souths in the first place.I think Souths , with Packer, are best placed to pay any transfer fee , it should not be part of any salary cap.

Souths aren't the only clubs that could afford the transfer fee. Broncos, Roosters, Panthers, Raiders ( actually do pretty well financially ), Bulldogs to name a few probably could as well. Not many of the clubs that could afford the transfer fee could fit him under the cap without losing a few top players to accommodate him anyway. Souths, Roosters and Bulldogs couldn't, I'd be surprised if the Broncos or Panthers could.

Couldn't imagine any of those clubs moving players on to fit in a player they want... Would never happen

Souths have first and last offer . How does that work? Does that mean that Manly can't even start talking with him until Souths do?

I guess so. Well, they could probably talk, but Manly can't table an offer until Burgess gets one from Souths first.

Is the first/last offer a written thing or more of a "Sam giving his word" type thing?

That's only if he returns before the end of 2016. He can return to play for who ever he wants after that.
