Paying that money for a player who regularly goes missing in games in utter stupidity, that said the knights and raiders can't compete with the big city teams due to third party deals etc so have to pay overs , we'll done parra for not increasing his money
The way to compete though isn't to overpay. It would be to target younger guys and get the retention discount

FWIW I think the deal the knights have offered is going to be a complete shit show and quicker than we all think
But I genuinely don’t know what else the knights could do to try and alter the course of their team
They tried to over pay for a kid and he would take their money and get out of the cuck chair, they have Ponga… you gotta swing for the fences

I don’t think this particular swing is gonna pan out well and achieve the end goal of a premiership but I understand them taking the swing
Comments about clubs like the Raiders and knights living in a different recruitment world are spot on. It requires different routes... Canberra have overpaid a shit ton of young talent and are hoping they hit... if that doesnt work, we're probably not far off deciding this kind of offer is our only way forward too.

As a Knights fan this is exactly where I’m at with it. Very good chance it’s a huge bust that doesn’t pan out, but tbh I’m at the point where I’d prefer the club to take a swing and a miss than be happy sitting at the bottom of the 8 for next decade.

One of the biggest criticisms I see is that he shouldn’t be on the same amount of money as Cleary, DCE, etc which is 100% correct but the Knights don’t have the option of trying to sign them.

So the knights are going to have $2.8m tied up in 2 players?

sheesh that doesn’t leave a lot for the rest of the squad

havent seen a club invest so highly in 2 players before, interested to see how it goes

That’s why junior development and pathways is so important. Can get away with overspending on some key positions if you’ve got a steady stream of talent ready to step up if someone’s forced out of the cap. The Knights luckily have that. We just can’t seem to produce halves hence targeting Brown (although Sharpe has a lot of potential).

2010? Go on...

Well, 2010/2011

-Sacked an experienced and better than average NRL coach in actual retread circumstances
-Hired an overhyped Storm assistant who talked big but showed little to back it up.
-Shed a tonne of quality and experience and replaced it with reserve grade journeymen
-All front office staff walked around in clown shoes at all times, just wating to do something stupid
-Proceed to win 15 wooden spoons and become the laughing stock of the NRL.

By my reckoning we've ticked off the first three since parting ways with BA. Probably 4

Jesus the Knights better have club options in their favour every couple of years. I'd be amazed if the NRL register it given how risky the deal is.

Amount of cash isn't too crazy to me. Cap keeps rising so you have more room for 'marquee' players.

The length of the deal is a tad crazy. Didn't work with Taumalolo. But I suppose it paid off with DCE. Either way its very risky business.

probably not the time/place however when you look into it I’m not sure it did

since he signed it they’ve made the finals 4 of the 10 years and the best he’s done is for them to one prelim which they got obliterated in

Believe it or not, Aidan Sezer has played more finals games in the last 10 years then DCE has

Hastings is on 800k and Brailey on 600k, both off contract next year, and we're not re-signing either.

I don't particularly like the signing, particularly the reported length of the contract, but for the next couple of years it's not a bad deal for us if you look at it like that. It's 3 - 5 years down the track that is concerning for me.

Even considering the Newcastle tax I think we're overpaying him. But it is what it is, there's nobody else available and we finally seem determined to not waste Ponga's entire career.

Tbh for me the dollars is too high but the length is what I think is mental. A decade for a running five eighth who will be 35 at the end of the deal...

I think ultimately it's expansion insurance right? Lock down two top tier players long term, gambling that the average will continue to thin with further teams. Especially factoring in the players who will want to come to clubs like Newcastle (and Parra for the record). In that sense it's probably less crazy, but still.

Meanwhile, with Galvin allegedly looking at testing the market I'd be keen to see Parra assemble a similar (but maybe not so overpriced) big deal to try and get him over. Tbh it's a big risk but plod like Wishart isn't gonna cut it if we want to avoid sinking back to early-2010s basket case Parra

I get why they would take a punt and sign him for big dollars but the issue for me is the 10 years which seems completely insane.
