Given how badly we need a halfback I think we need to get this deal done. Whether it's a straight swap between the two players or maybe we get another Tigers player as well remains to be seen, but we really need this to happen for 2023 to be anything better than how 2022 panned out. Klemmer has been a consistent performer and I like what he brings but we can't keep him on $850K anyway, there's just too much money tied up in one-dimensional forwards, and Klemmer is about as one-dimensional as they get in the modern game.

Yes this means the Safs have to step up but both of them have declined the opportunity to go to the world cup so they can focus on the pre-season so I'm at least confident that they're in a better headspace now.

If we can land Hastings then I don't mind Clune or Gamble at no.6 because they can let him run the show, we would need a good fullback to replace KP if we are serious about him moving to the halves.

if we are doing a player swap with Klemmer and Hastings, we should try to add Laurie to it. Tigers haven't resigned Laurie yet

I don't know their salaries but apparently Klemmer is on about $850,000

I would assume we could get Hastings for around $500,000 and Laurie for about $400,000

so it would cost us about $50,000 more but solve a lot of our spine problems

I could definitely get on board with that plan. Having Laurie at fullback would mean we could get serious about putting KP in at 5/8 and that means Clune/Gamble as backup which is what they should be.

They’ve got 4 halves and want Bateman who won’t be cheap. Can’t we just sign Hastings without giving them our best player?

They want to move on Hastings. Why do we need to move on Klemmer?
Or you could ask why is he worth holding onto for 850k of our cap in 2023 and beyond?

If there's a chance to let him go now and get his family set up beyond next year and it also benefits us and allowing to spread our cap on other positions then I am for it.

I do acknowledge he was our best and most consistent this year but at 850k I don't think he's leading us to the promise land and it would be in everyone's best interest to split now and focus on moving forward

The 850k is only relevant if we can spend it better.

Which means we have to have someone worth spending it on, and be short. We shouldn't be short, surely we have a heap of cash to spend still.

Don’t seem to have seen to many potential 1st graders come through the ranks over the past decade or so. It’s not that we lose them, yes some go elsewhere but few are regulars in NRL. Flegg 2022 is a prime example of a very good side winning a comp but already some have left and some are being signed by Knights either development or full time. Players don’t seem to be ready for grade even though 20yrs of age, we seem more intent with winning Flegg than developing and giving them experience in Cup games the top Flegg players should be ready for Cup while dropping back is an option
Penrith won Flegg in 22.

With or without this trade we are in for 850. There are no savings to be made.

it is possible to make it work better, but that’s not necessarily our way.

Hastings and Elliott add something to the mix we have not had for some time. Players actually coming off a good run of form and are very much improved as both players and people. There is an arc to their footballing journey. They still have plenty to prove.

That's just it, but I wonder if we allow him to go now it might allow us to make some bigger moves for 2024 if we can front load some contracts next year.

Somehow though I feel our cap situation is a mess and we don't have as much room as all of us think we should have.

We have too much cap invested in the front row for a team with no halfback. This is a great deal for us.

Hastings, Elliott, Hetherington, Gamble. It almost looks like a plan to harden us up. Going back to the old days where even if they won, teams used to go home sore and lost the next week.
The game is officiated differently now... Hopefully after every game the opponent goes home sore and we can finish games with all 13 players on the field.

Hastings for Klem is about as good as we could hope for right now. If the deal is done properly we get a competent halfback and should free up some cash too. Yes it banks a lot on the Saifitis pulling their fingers out, but it's a gamble we're not in any position to knock back. It's not like we can be any more in the toilet than we are now, and we won't be paying a hard but fairly pedestrian pack worker 800k+ a year.

They were both kept away from training today so sounds like it'll be done soon. Knights are going away for their pre-season camp tomorrow which I'm sure they'd like Hastings to be apart of, if possible.

Both are signing 3-year deals according to the Telegraph.
