Perhaps, yeah totally. Gagai would be good value on $400k, and if he actually wants to be back in Newcastle, I don't think it's a stupid thing to chuck out there. On a $9 million salary cap, $400k is just a brush over average wage. That'd be my terms, or there abouts. If let's say the Cowboys throw $500k at him, and he feels that an extra $200k-$300k in his pocket over the next 3 years is worth more to him than going to the team he wants to go to, then that's his prerogative.I'm not for a second suggesting we recruit under Tuala hence why I said if we had decent depth Tuala would not be an automatic starter.
The thing is if Gagai thinks he's worth $700k we're not getting him for $350k, he's had enough good origin games where some dumb team like the cowboys will give him $500-600k.
I guess I misunderstood your idea of depth. I interpreted that statement as recruiting depth players underneath what we currently have - and that it would make our current guys fight harder for their positions and potentially improve. I don't think the two we're talking about have a ceiling much higher than what they've currently achieved, so I didn't like that idea. If I've got that wrong, my mistake.
But like, I'm not gonna start a re-sign Gagai facebook group or anything, and I'm open to other options. I just think when a player calls you out that he wants to come back, and it's someone you could use, you've got a bit of leverage there that doesn't otherwise exist on the market, and it's worth at least having a crack at exploiting it. None of the best teams are paying full market freight for their squads, at least not on the books.
