Gagai doesn’t move the needle IMO. Not much better than what we have and old.

we are still a strike back rower short of any sort of balanced side.
Way, way better than what we have given that we're running Kurt Mann as a first string centre. Not to say I think he turns us into a premiership threat or anything, but it's an obvious improvement to the roster.

The pack needs someone dynamic, for sure.

I'm not convinced he'll be great at hooker or even look great at the Roosters. Time will tell I guess.
That was my immediate thought as well. The grass is always greener, but I can't see him playing more minutes for them than us.

At the end of the day, we offered him a year more and more money than the Roosters. I don't know what else people would have had us do. Saying that we prioritised Mann and Fitz over him is bollocks, they would have bit our hands off for their deals once they realised they weren't getting more elsewhere. Watson tested the market, found something he liked the look of, and took it. We couldn't have done more, it's his decision. It's a real shame to lose him - but what do you do? Pay him $500k a year or more when he's getting offers of $300k from other clubs? That's Haganesque.

My little fella just got the 2021 Indigenous guernsey for his birthday and wanted #13 and WATSON on the back. If it wasn't for lockdown his grandmother would've had it done!

Sucks for your little fella, but unfortunately Watson didn't want to be a Knight anymore.

He is going to be very dangerous in that system. Wouldn't be surprised if he's being talked about as an Origin utility by the end of that deal.
I reckon you're dreaming on that one with the blokes that are in front of him for that jersey. If Watson is thinking similar, then he's got an over-inflated opinion of himself.

Depth? AOB starts Kurt every week, and re-promoting Lachlan Fitzgibbon two weeks after dropping him despite us winning the previous week and him doing literally nothing to earn a recall. He must have trained ahh-mazingly in that period. So it isn't depth.
They were resigned for 2022 and beyond- it has nothing to do with their position in the team in 2021. We clearly have a bit more money to throw around for next year and there's the potential to make a couple of key signings, so until the roster is full, it's pretty useless getting upset about these two players and the first grade positions they are apparently taking up.

Does anyone see the irony in Ponga saying he extended his contract because he wanted to win a premiership with Newcastle, and then his best mate/roomie/team mate leaves the club to presumably win a premiership with another team?

It's a major credit to Kalyn that he has the character to stick with us given all that we've invested in him, tbh. I didn't see it as a given, and wouldn't have held it against him if he went to market either tbh.

I have been waiting to see him leave since we brang him to the club. If we aren’t pushing for titles in the next two years, you definitely couldn’t begrudge the guy for moving on.

I wouldn't have begrudged him for it even now, yeah. We heard a lot from Cowboys fans about how toxic Andre (his father) was in negotiations when Kalyn came here. To be honest, I've only seen a father that has looked out for the best interests of his son first and foremost. They seem like a real old school, tight family unit - and I think there's loyalty in there too. We've looked after Kalyn on and off the field since initially engaging with him, and followed through on our word to do so at every turn. I do think that counts for a lot with them. They love Newcastle, and from what I can see, respect the club too.

We've made Kalyn captain now, and to be honest for his development I think we should just keep him there and let him grow into it at this point too. Obviously the more invested he is, the more likely he is to stay.

This is crazy to think, and perhaps deserves its own thread, but I feel this this year is the peak of our "premiership" window.

Over the next 12 months we lose Watson, Klemmer and Pearce most likely and potentially others, and I'm not confident we have the cattle coming through to help improve us over the next couple of years without going backwards first.

Our recruitment has to be spot on and we need Zammit to start producing magic now to have some young guns ready for 2024.

How are we looking better next year? With the loss of Conor I don't think we do at this stage. We're seriously banking on our spine playing as many games possible together next year or it could be ugly again.

Anyway as I said, it probably deserves it's own thread on if we're on the up or down trajectory over the next couple of year, but I do feel this year is our best chance at doing something, without being able to see into the future of our 2022 and 2023 squads.

It just comes down to roster management from here. The players you've mentioned leaving will open up plenty of cash. There no reason why we can't continue to improve in that time with good recruitment and coaching.

I'm hoping Bailey Hodgson lives up to the hype, personally.
