Mitch Barnett set to walk early from Knights
Suspended Newcastle forward Mitchell Barnett is on the verge of quitting the Knights, with the Warriors set to pounce
Barnett, banned for six matches earlier this week after elbowing Penrith‘s Chris Smith, has been locked in talks with the Warriors despite having another year remaining on his contract with the Knights.
It is understood the Knights will not stand in his way should he want to depart at the end of this season.
News Corp understands his management reached out to a number of clubs some months ago but the Warriors are leading the chase, in part because Barnett shares a close relationship with New Zealand coach Nathan Brown.
It is understood the Warriors have tabled Barnett a three-year deal to entice him to join the side from next season. Brown signed Barnett from Canberra to join Newcastle in 2016 and helped establish him as an NRL player.
The Warriors have retained their interest despite Barnett being sidelined for the next six weeks because of an elbow to the head of Smith. Barnett showed immediate contrition for the incident.
New Zealand have already been among the most active clubs ahead of next season. They have added Dylan Walker, Luke Metcalf and fellow back-rower Marata Niukore. They have allowed Euan Aitken to exit a season early for his three-year deal.
Barnett’s addition would beef up an already intimidating forward pack which includes Addin Fonua-Blake, Tohu Harris and Josh Curran.
The Warriors are hopeful Matt Lodge recommits for a further 12 months despite the forward rejecting a three year offer to remain at the club. Lodge is yet to decide if we will take up a one year option in his favour to stay at the Warriors next season.
The Knights will be on the lookout for a backrower if Barnett does leave. Tyson Frizell and Lachlan Fitzgibbon have respective options in their favour to remain at the club in 2023.
Another back-row option, Jirah Momoisea, is off-contract at season’s end.
Newcastle have been linked to boom young English forward Will Pryce. Newcastle’s head of recruitment Clint Zammit travelled to the UK to watch Pryce’s Huddersfield team last month.
