I used to hate SKD when he played for the Roosters but I like having him on the team. Seems like a good bloke to have around. Great in the air, bringing the ball out of our half and has a classic brain explosion at least once a game. Cracks me up every time.

Keep SKD for a season or two to groom Star Toa and Best. Don't want to be in a situation where we have only talented youngsters being rushed into first grade.

Think if Griff not injured most likely no need for Buhrer think this will be his last, SKD should get another year if no good outsider comes along giving young locals time to mature. If Griff makes it back this season and is ok would re-sign him and fight it out with Levi 2020. Woolford is a wait and see, Hunt also.

The game’s hottest property, Kalyn Ponga, has decided to put contract talks on hold while he settles into the new season in his new position of five-eighth.

The Knights are keen to lock up the brilliant utility on a long-term basis to stop the NRL’s glamour clubs from poaching him.

Ponga still has two seasons to run on his current Newcastle contract but under the NRL’s rules, rival clubs can approach him late next year.

The club is attempting to stop that from happening by extending Ponga - but there is no likelihood of an early deal.

“Kalyn is loving life and football in Newcastle and we have had preliminary talks about a new deal,” his manager Wayde Rushton revealed to Wide World Of Sports.

“But right now, he wants to put that into the background. He has a lot going on in his life. The season is only one game old and he is playing in a new position and coming to grips with that.

“Sponsors are also lining up to get a piece of him, so he is in a good place at the moment.”

Let’s be honest- a contract isn’t worth much these days. You can sign him up to 10 years and it still wouldn’t guarantee him being at the club. Just keep him happy and provide opportunities for him to follow his passions off the field (whether that be charity or further study) and we’ll be a good chance of keeping him long term.

Best chance to keep him is to win lots of games/premiership, winning club is happy club Oh! And give him what he wants anyway

Couldnt imagine him moving anyway, his family is important and theyre settled in Newy. He just wouldnt suit a big city environment. I'd say we're a good chance of keeping him in any case.

Very smart to put contract talks on the back burner now, he has his future secured, clubs will be lining up to sign him, and he can use that when the time comes to gets best dollars from the Knights, another club or union if need be.

Even if he signs now and extends, if he isn't happy at some point and wants out, he will get his way, ala Klemmer.

Trick is to keep him happy, not wrap him up in a contract.

I know we’re happy we missed out on TPJ because we got Klem instead. But shit it would of been nice to have him in the side if he always played like he is tonight. Pure aggression, it’s kind of beautiful to watch

if he was added to our side the Premiership window would just blow wide open. Get rid of Rossdog, Buhrer, Moga add in some 3rd parties and make a play.

Isnt he on the market again at the end of the year ?

I'd love TPJ but if it comes down to Klemmer or TPJ, I'm picking Klem every day of the week. He was exactly what we need - a no nonsense, consistent, metre-eating middle forward who is a leader to boot.

TPJ doesn't fit that criteria, and I don't think he'll ever be that kind of player. He's much more in the mould of Taumalolo

Hopefully we can both!!!

From Toohey's News

- Knights have held preliminary talks with Isaac Moses, manager of Tevita Pangai Jr, and are expected to chase him hard. Knights maintain re-signing Ponga & Ramien long-term will be a priority but believe they have enough wiggle room to make Pangai an enticing offer. He knocked back Knights offer last season but there was a belief among Knights officials that Pangai showed a genuine interest in returning to Newcastle. Knights recruitment manager Troy Pezet quoted in article confirming preliminary talks and says "the indication is Tevita is keen to at least consider a move back to Newcastle."

- Herman reached out to the Warriors about a return to New Zealand after being left out of the round 1 team and word got back to Knights officials. No suggestion Herman has or will ask for a release, nor that the Knights would grant it, but not ideal news regardless.
