Testing the market if you basically want to stay means asking others to offer more so that your team has to up the ante, get what you can but stay where you want

I read today where they are claiming the issue with retaining Best is salary cap related. That can't be the reason, as he cant leave till the 2025 season, for which the Kights only have 11 players committed till 2025.

Surely any extra from letting Young go would cover Best.
We'd still need a wing but at least we wouldn't need a wing and a centre.
Then we've got money from Fitz.
I'd let Mann go to keep Best.
Signing Best should be a priority imo.

It could be an issue if they are looking to upgrade and extend Best’s contract, i.e he’s on $500,000 til 2025, but we give him a new contract for 2024-27 at $600,000.

Same as how Ponga’s first couple of contracts were extended/upgraded before they reached his final year.

The only club he can get an upgrade from in 2024 is the Knights. If they want to upgrade him in 2024 then they are creating their own salary cap issues.

Depends how it all unfolds. But for example he might extend for a little less if we upgrade him next year.

Which is my point. He and new management might be wanting an upgrade based on him now being an Origin player, and the club may not have budgeted that for 2024.

Then don't give him an upgrade, he is already signed for 2014. Next upgrade is 2015.

Unfortunately, it’s quite common practice these days for players like Best who have breakout seasons. Clubs can upgrade and extend contracts before they end, or risk the player testing their value after November 1 and getting into a bidding war with other clubs.

Yeah given we’ve just seen Dom Young have a breakout year last year then lose him immediately to a club with more cash and I’d rather not do that with Bradman. We’ve been pretty patient with him and he’s having cracking year, funny what happens when a talented player is able to string some games together without injuries. We’ll need to upgrade him for sure but it’s necessary. Ultimately are we likely to get an equal or better centre on the open market that would cost us less than Bradman? Probably not, I certainly can’t think of any off the top of my head.

I could also see him staying for less than what another club might offer unless the difference in the offers is huge. Although the other motivating factor for him might be how desperate he is for a premiership in the next few years. If he wants to stay here there’s a good chance he never wins one. But going to a club like the Roosters, Storm, Souths, Eels etc could be tempting for him.

Best isn’t going anywhere. Kid loves the club more than anyone and is probably too stupid to work out that he won’t win a comp while he’s here.

We just need to make sure we don’t throw huge overs at him to keep him now that he’s played SOO. We did that with DSaf and backfired.

Best is apparently already on 700k next year and one of the top 5 highest paid centers in the game. If the club upgrades him they're dumb, so they probably will.
These are the tough ones that often come back to bite us yeah. We have too many players that we invest in take their first big chance to go to market, pump their price up to the moon and then never live up to it. Players like Bradman need to sign early and stay for reasonable/unders if they want to ever compete for a premiership.

Most other teams manage to get at least a few of these deals done. I dunno where to point the finger exactly, but someone needs to give Browny a call about what was in his missus butter chicken recipe.

He is doing what all smart players do. Doesn’t signal intent to leave. Haas is unlikely to leave Broncs. He’d be mad to at the moment. The Roosters are simply a pack of thieves.

100%, we need the locals to be staying for less than they can get on the open market, not giving them more the moment they actually show some talent and threaten to leave.

I'd be telling him we were paying you overs for the last few years when you were barely on the park, now you're already getting paid like one of the best centres in the game. I don't care what you can get from other clubs here's the deal take it or leave it.

Yeah I think this is the approach. Would suck to lose him to the tigers or dragons. Or the roosters of course. At the end of the day he's on a good wicket and we need him at a fair price to move forward.

I love Bradman, hes an obvious talent but he still has plenty of holes in his game and id not want to pay big overs to keep him and screw our cap (further). His defence in particular needs work still

Guys like Tago, Timoko, Penisini and even a guy like Connor Tracey offer far better value

I honestly think Bradman should be counting himself lucky hes on a deal as high as hes on right now.

If someone is going to take Bradman and pay him 800k a year or over, we need to let him go. There will be tons of good centres out there that offer 90% of what Bradman offers for half the price. I love Bradman and I hope he stays at the club long term and stays fit as well but we can't base our decisions on emotions.
