Big NO to Brown for me. We need a leader, not an overpriced maybe with a possibly busted knee. He will never be a controlling half, and nor should he try to be. His strengths should be his focus, but it’s not what we need. We have fantastic ball runners in the squad. We have nobody to put them in the holes.

Money and duration is ridiculous, if true.

Have you seen Brown play? He’s one of the most naturally gifted players at putting other blokes clean through holes in NRL history. He’s a very good running half but a better ball player.

Please no Fogarty. Dude has to be dead last in line engagements among NRL halfbacks. Yes he’s got a big boot but he doesn’t create enough time and space for his outside men. He’s 32 so not likely to improve on that front either.

Fogarty would only make sense if he was in addition to someone like Brown, not instead of, where his main responsibility was just kicking. A good long kicking game is still something we need, and neither Brown or any of our current halves really have that.

I’ve heard he wants out of the Raiders, but how much he wants will be the clincher. He’s only on 450k at the Raiders which we could definitely afford in addition to Brown unless he’s wanting 700k+ (but I doubt POS would be willing to go that high there anyway).

Save the money for a half.

Again though, who?????

I don’t think anyone here in support of signing Brown would see him as their number 1 pick if we had the option of signing anyone in the comp…but I’d personally prefer to try and sign Brown to at least offer us another point of attack and help KP out rather than just have the money sitting there waiting for someone that doesn’t exist (or at least not exist in a reality where they’re available and would sign up to play in Newcastle).

Only thing you will hear if you ask about Brown is the club has closed shop around discussing it with anyone. Media are repeatedly being told nothing. Even Toohey at this time.

Yes, I have seen him play. And no, he doesn’t appeal to me predominantly as a ball player. He is quite good down the business end of the field, which, I grant you, is something we have lacked, but we still need to get down that end.

I’m not one to blindly focus on game stats, in fact I barely check unless something is really apparent during the game, but let’s take a look at his Line Break Assist numbers. In the past three seasons he has managed 46 LBAs from 69 games (.667 per game). One man put into space every 3 halves of football.

For comparison:
Jerome Hughes -61/66 @ 0.924.
DCE -49/68 @ 0.721,
Cody Walker -66/70 @ 0.942,
Ben Hunt -51/67 @ 0.761,
Even the much-maligned Nicho Hynes -76/64 @ 1.188.

He’s not even the outright best at his own club:
Clint Gutherson -48/72 @ 0.667.

They’re not the worst figures, comparable to DCE and Hunt is admirable, but to say he is top tier in NRL history at that one aspect of play is extremely generous.

Damn I wish we had been in a position to have a run at Luai.

tbh I’m content not making anymore signings from Penrith as you just never know how they’re going to perform out of that system (obviously that doesn’t count if Clearys ever available haha).

At least Brown’s from a basket case of a club so we’d get what we expected.
