Copping a massive hammering on the Bye Round. So many shit takes it’s hilarious.

Should have signed Pezet for 8-900k and given Leo 1 mil a year. I normally respect Graham’s views but he’s just got no idea about this. The other bloke Charlie is a complete nuffie. Insinuating that Ponga wanted this and that’s the only reason we signed him. It’s bordering on slander.

In 24 hours Brown has gone from a Top 5 pivot to a no talent hack according to these deadshits.
But if we signed Pezet especially on that type of money, to them, we'd be stupid for throwing all our eggs in one basket and putting too much pressure on the bloke to perform.. We can't win basically

$1.2-1.3 million for a 24 year old half with a proven value of $900K: Insane overs, so irresponsible, so risky.

$8-900K for a 22 year old half with a proven value of $???: Solid cap management, what could go wrong?

We offered Pezet overs and he turned us down.
The 2 of them sounded legit like a jealous girlfriend. The Charlie gronk has to be a Parra fan he’s that salty.

If people don't agree with the deal that's fine but the lack of any sort of counter-factual from the media in favour of just jumping on the "this deal is crazy!" bandwagon is getting quite annoying.

None of the media seems to be applying any sort of critical thinking as to why the Knights might be motivated to do this. This thread has more sensible comments than anything I've heard from the media.

Luai moving to Tigers to help them go from wooden spoon to top 8 hopefuls and going from 6 to 7, possible buy of the year.
Us getting Brown to help us go from top 8 to top 4 hopefuls and going from 6 to 7, idiocy!

It is pretty crazy to be fair.
It is for sure. I wonder if that's the source of all the hostility. I think the perception is that this is a new benchmark being set for the value of quality halves - and people aren't happy about it. It was inevtiable, of course... with cap increases and new teams getting introduced imminently, but we're probably the first club to acknowledge the situation in writing and dollars.

What people aren't seeing is this is what it takes for a regional/unsexy team to pull a big name.

Re the media, I don’t think they actually understand why 10 year contracts are given.

The Knights obviously don’t actually think he’s going to be amazing for 10 years. They’re offering him security in exchange for coming to begin with hoping that he will be what we need for 6-7 years of that.

I think it’s also important to note that a 10 year contract with mutual options for the last 2 years isn’t actually a 10 year contract. It’s an 8 year contract (which will only take Brown to 31), but 10 years alone sounds better in a media headline.

Gus made some good points and was pretty balanced about it. To be honest as annoying as the bloke is, his opinion means a lot more to me than the 360 morons or James Graham.

He said he didn’t have an issue with the money or length of contract. He and Cleary also talked about how in the biggest games, halves with running games are a lot more valuable that play making. He also pointed out that the Storm are highly successful and have 3 fullbacks in their spine.

To be fair Brent Read has backed the deal on every show/podcast he's been on when talking about it.

He's just about the only one mind you

Luai had showed he could play 7 when Cleary was out, Brown has shown little without Moses... he's got talent though, so there's time

Wasn’t the Eels win record even with Moses pretty shit though recently? Maybe the problem is the Eels rather than Brown?
Likewise a lot easier for Luai to perform in Penrith’s system.

I reckon I could have done a good job as Penrith's 7 on that system. Let's see how Luai does in the Tigers system. I reckon he'll do well but it won't be 82% win rate like it was with the Panthers.

Brown is coming here to be part of a system. Ponga is the main man. Brown is a Cogger/Hastings replacement.

It'll go from:
Cogger - 500k
Hastings - 800k
Gamble - 250k

To:
Brown - 1.3m
Local Youth Prospect - 150k
Gamble - 250k

Or something like that. I'm sure all the good teams have like 30% of their cap tied in their spine anyway. We have it concentrated in 2 of the 4 while others have it spread more evenly for 4.

Brown looks the right profile for a playmaker, 150 odd first grade games, strong defender, run first, decent kicking game, international.

I can't really wrap my head around the intense scrutiny to be honest. If Brown had taken up the option to stay at Parra for 1.1m over the next 6 years, literally no-one bats an eyelid and we all move on with life. We've paid him 200k "loser club" freight and promised it to him for a decade. I get that people are freaking out about 10 years, I get it. The salary cap will not be what it is now in 10 years, and his rachet clause is very limited, so honestly the risk there for me isn't the panic everyone is having about it.

Furthermore, what I don't understand is how every tom, dick and harry thinks that the 200k extra we're paying him takes it from solid business by Parra to a salary cap annhilating disaster for us. People are speaking like this is going to send the club back to the f**king dark ages. We've just spent years paying Jackson Hastings and Jack Cogger the same amount or more to play at NSW Cup standard for us. We *absolutely* would have been better off with Dylan Brown and literally any kid filling out the top 30 instead. Way way better off.

So yeah... I dunno I just don't get it. Maybe it's bias, but to me the whole league world lost their f**king brains overnight. It's literally only Gus and a handful of others that can look at the deal and see the vision. Honestly, I think it's just a mix of sour grapes and people getting upsetti spaghetti that the price for halves on the open market is exploding. Gus said it best for mine. I agree with him that in the current player market - good halves are so rare that they're actually undervalued right now.
