I tend to think Pezet knocked us back when there was a chance Hughes might leave. The next 4 years being his reserve might change his attitude, but agree he is a bit unknown and perhaps doesn’t want to come here any way.

It kinda shits me that the club has been pressured into re-signing Gags. At some point, the pathway guys need a path to first grade (if they are good enough). I kinda wonder whether Fletch Hunt might overtake him next year any way…

He’s old and can’t defend. I’m not much of a fan of the signing to be honest.
You'd be the only one

I was also initially 50/50 on re-signing him but watching Sunday, the two most ready replacements in Hunt and McCarthy aren’t ready defensively so I’m happy he’s sticking around for another year. I say they’ve deliberately done at that price so that if one of the younger blokes can overtake Gags next year we can transition him into cup/coaching role without it hurting the cap too much. Ideally you want someone to overtake him next year as he’s not going to be around forever.

I didn't mind either way honestly, so as long as we didn't break the bank. Happy enough for him to stay on for 1 year max. I even joked in the game thread after Sisagi's try we need to keep him, he's slowed down but I don't think he gets embarrassed that badly.

Fletcher is 19 and signed till 2027.

If gagai only plays the 1 year, you've potentially got his centre spot plus also a vacant wing spot for 2027 if they dont resign marzhew.

Plenty of pathway there for at least 1, if not 2 outside backs. Gotta make them earn it though. If he fills out over the next 18 months, and gets stronger with his carries it solves the issues under the high ball Greg's been plagued with, so he has a realistic shot to replace him next year, especially if a new coach shakes things up.

And between Best and Ponga, there's a good 15+ games in the backline covering for either one of them based on the last 5 years of injuries. Ill sleep much better at night knowing Hunt/Schiller are the next men up in the backline, then get rid of gagai and have next to no depth there.

One for the good guys.
My work is done here until the next time he’s off contract 😚

The Fogarty situation could so easily come back to bite the Raiders next year. Obviously they’ve way outperformed everyone’s expectations this year. They’re looking like a really good chance of being in the GF or at least a prelim at worst I reckon. But you then lose the bloke who steers the ship next year and I wouldn’t even rule out the Raiders flopping and missing the finals next year. If he goes on to play well at Manly and the Raiders have a hard time without him, then it looks like a really stupid decision imo.
It's reminiscent of when they let Sezer go and replaced him with George Williams. We'll see if Ricky deals with it better this time.
