NRL statement: Eels are cap compliant

PARRAMATTA has made off-contract five-eighth Corey Norman their No. 1 retention priority post the club’s salary cap scandal.

The Saturday Telegraph can reveal Eels coach Brad Arthur has started talks with Norman and his manager Paul Sutton about an extension.

The Eels are keen to lock in the in-form playmaker as soon as possible with a number of rival clubs, including the Roosters, circling for his signature.

Norman’s manager originally feared his client could be squeezed out to help the Eels get under the salary cap.

This has now changed following the departure of Nathan Peats to the Gold Coast and the impending retirement of Anthony Watmough due to a chronic knee injury.

Parramatta director Geoff Gerard confirmed discussions with Norman and his agent were well underway.

“The coach has been talking to Corey and his manager,” Gerard told The Saturday Telegraph.

“We are working with (Ian) Schubert, Peter (Sharp) and the coach to make sure those coming off contract are given offers and negotiations start.

“That’s our next priority.”

Gerard admitted the club hasn’t commenced their search for independent directors, as requested by the NRL.

The Eels have until August to select three directors to take charge of operations moving forward.

“The NRL is aware that we want to work with them as quickly as we can to implement their recommendations, but those discussions haven’t started,” he said.

“It’s a little way off, but we’ll get there.”

Gerard said the club was also yet to determine who would be main voice at Parramatta when the five board directors, including chairman Steve Sharp, were forced to move on.

“Dealing in a crisis nobody has sat down and said, ‘okay, where are we with a temporary chairman or who is going to be the spokesperson,” he said.

“We may have that discussion in the next 48 hours.”

As for the prospect of taking on the chairman role, Gerard said he’d have to seriously weigh up his options before committing.

The former back-rower is currently juggling a fulltime job with a waste management company on top of his board duties at the Eels.

“That is a discussion I’d have to have with the other directors and my wife,” he said.

“Let’s be honest it isn’t an easy role and it does take up a lot of time.

“I still have a fulltime job and I’m dealing with a lot of this (Parramatta) stuff after hours.

“I’ve got a very sympathetic employer who knows what is going on.

“I work for one of the biggest waste companies in Australia and the world, so trying to deal with the Parramatta stuff and work is not easy.

“I can assure you it puts stress on not only me, but my wife and family and that’s something I’ve got to consider.”

Norman is class and should be retained. I am convinced there is a good chance that Peats will return in 2017. I would not re-sign Michael Gordon. I would extend Tim Mannah's contract now.'he is great value, experienced and is top defender. With all our departures forced upon us I would still try and sign a top shelf prop like Tamou but if that fails I would try and entice a prop like Matulino or that Raiders' prop whose name escapes me now.

Good to hear that Norman is #1 priority, hopefully Arthur is #2 on that re-signing list. I agree with Avenger that we need another prop. The ones I'd be looking at are: Vaughn/Boyd, Klemmer, Liam Knight or see if there are any teams looking to offload a big forward.

Maybe before we look at a prop we should be looking for a dummy half? Possibly one that has connections to Norman already?

People are worried about getting someone "flasher" than Gordon at the back, but personally I'd give him a one year extension for 2017 and use any spare money to retain and re-stock our front row prospects as a priority.

If we can lock in Norman, then 2017 is actually looking ok...
1. Gordon (one year exdtension)
6. Norman
7. Foran
9. De Gois (one year extension?)/Pritchard

That way French gets another year of development to see if he'll come through into a first grade standard fullback, AND we get to spend money on replacements for Paulo and possibly for Wicks/Gower in the front row rotation (depending if they go around again in 2017)....

Agree with Avenger that I think Peats might be back in 2018, especially if most of the squad stays together and if Pritchard hasn't developed into a decent starting hooker by June 2017... So 2018's spine might look like:
1. French / or buy in someone else?
6. Norman
7. Foran (assuming he exercises his option to stay with this playing group)
9. Peats (return) / Pritchard (in the final year of his extension)

If Matulino is on the nose at the Warriors as rumoured he'd be a great signing.

I'd be keen on some of the young props on the market. Sauaso Sue and Nathan Brown are guns and off contract. Vaughan and Boyd are contracted and I don't see Ricky releasing them. Benton Lawrence isn't young but would be worth a look too, he'd be reasonably well priced I'd imagine

I'd stay clear from Lawrence, I'm told his back is f**ked

Our 1-7 is fine

1 Gordon/French ( if kicks on will put serious pressure)
2 Semi
3 Jennings
4 Taka/Fuimano ( one may play backrow)
5 Gutherson
6 Foran
7 Norman

I do not see a need signing a fullback unless we do not rate Bevan.
Our backrow looks solid with Beau - Manu- KE - Tepai. If the salary cap can be seen as a possitive its getting rid of watmough off our books. I think Fuimanno may push into first grade next year.Either in centres or backrow.

Hooker is an issue as is PROPs. Peats is tough and suits a certain team. But not my style of hooker. I like a hooker that can make busts up the middle and create scoring chances.Peats does not give you that. Either does Kaysa or De gois. They can do a job and almost as good a job as Peats but if we landed segs who has major floors in reading the game we do become better in atttack.

Front row of Mannah-Terepo-Wicks-Alvaro would be by far the worse in the NRL. Mannah is the only genuine first grader and is not exactly intimidating. The others are hot and cold and bench options at most.
Id look at Sam Moa and Matagi as options. As well as T-rex

Fair enough on Lawrence, if his backs no good it's no good.

Nelson Asofa-Solomona is another one off contract, he'd be a great signing
