Surely the aim is to prolong life rather than shorten it...
I don't think it is necessarily as simple as that. The issue of whether the state should stop someone taking steps that harm themselves isn't a 'no brainer'. At what point do you apply this? We all do things that expose us to higher / lower risks. Which of these forms of behaviour deserve a law stopping us from doing them? Should we prolong the life a terminally ill person in great pain? I dunno. Should we stop people from eating unhealthy foods? This is a question that doesn't ultimately relies on value judgements.....and I'm happy to accept that people have different values to my own....just seems that some aren't so happy to reciprocate.
