While smokers are more expensive to look after per year of life, after accounting for revenue from excise/import duty we actually save money overall coz they don't live as long.

I'm not sure that we ban everything that is harmful to themselves (e.g. sunbaking), but eventually there's a threshold at which we do, in fact, legislate. Sometimes legislating against a harm factor creates new problems (driving supply into the hands of crims etc).

Surely the aim is to prolong life rather than shorten it...

Good on her. I like Jacqui Lambie. Her son is/was an ice-addict and was in a long-term rehab. Maybe still is. I think she had a pretty hard time with him, as a single mum.
