Rumours and Stuff

You should get higher highs and lower lows if you stack the top 17. It's what I'd do cos some other teams will too, and some of them will have good luck with injuries.

Every player has a quiet game here and there, but Hayne, inconsistent? Hardly. Look at what the guy has achieved and all in the worst team in the comp. I doubt even Smith or Thurston could of done what he has done.
Lol, fair dinkum. *rolls eyes emoticon*

I'm not a Smith fan and have found JT annoying, but they've achieved whole worlds more in the game than Jarryd... and yes, with more consistency.

They have.

But remember:

* Thurston won the 2015 Premiership with the Australian starting front row; Taumalolo (a gun); Cooper and Bolton (under-rated, and Cooper played Origin this year)...the list of quality goes on.

* Smith won a title off the back of cheating, and played alongside Slater and Cronk his whole career.

Meanwhile, Hayne has had the pleasure of playing alongside such luminaries as Carl Webb, Casey McGuire, Chris Walker, Chris Hicks, Etu Uaisele, Matt Ryan...

The only times Hayne playes in halfway decent squads was for NSW and Australia, and he was players' player for NSW, and dominant for Australia in an unfamiliar position.

Had Hayne had the pleasure of playing for Melbourne or Brisbane, there's not a doubt in my mind we'dbe thinking of him as the next Immortal.

Instead, he had a mediocre team around him because he cost too much - and he was still good enough to lead the NRL for tries and try assists.

I understand some players are on overs and some are on unders, but for the purposes of discussion, let's assume these hypothetical players are being paid what they're worth. Alternately we can assume they're all paid 10% or 20% (or another number) overs. Let me know which you prefer.

No, every team will use 25+ with most using 30.

Why is the $800k player more likely to be overpaid than the $1M player? And why do you think you'd have to pay $180k for a backup? $180k is a top 17 player. Most backups would be on much less than $120k (being minimum salary plus 50%).

You think there's little difference between a guy worth $80k and another guy worth more than double that?!? I think you and I are having two different discussions here.

As I said, your 18th 'best' player (the player who makes the 18th most appearances) will probably play at least a dozen games (an average of 12.6 last year, across all 16 teams). The player with the 19th most appearances last year averaged 11 games (almost half a season) and player 20 averaged 9.8 games last year, across all teams. That's a lot of football to entrust to a player on minimum salary.

Compared to the players who make an appearance or two through the season, it is pretty clear that not all backups are equal. Brian Smith said on his blog that it is a huge decision clubs make, how much they want to pay players outside their top 17. The obvious implication is that the answer isn't automatically to pay players 18-25 the minimum salary. Or it wouldn't be a huge decision. You are being far too simplistic in your analysis.

Ive been nursing a theory for a while now that Pou in real life is actually Brian Smith.
Anyone else feeling me?

I'm not convinced that our cheating was all that it could be for the majority of Hayne's time with us.

There's a reason Hayne has never played for a strong club, and I don't reckon it's loyalty.

And how long were the cowboys struggling with JT. Tigers with Prince, Robbie and Benji. There are multiple examples. Good squads struggle with poor coaching as well. It's not all Haynes fault

But remember
That was sterling stuff. Hayne has been so hard done by durimg his career....

You should apply for a job with Hayne's management, writing all of his future "journey" media releases - you could even end up with the gig of ghost writing the inevitable autobiogrsphy, witha puff piece like that!

Lol and you should get the job of writing his unauthorised biography. Be a good juicy read and as genuine as a Chopper Read book

Jarryd Hayne remains open to rugby move despite Waratahs snub
  • 12 minutes ago

  • Source: AAP
JARRYD Hayne remains open to a move to rugby union and, if the former NRL star and NFL player does shift to the 15-a-side game, he could line up against the Wallabies within months of doing so.

The NSW Waratahs announced on Tuesday they would not table an offer to Hayne.

But Hayne’s manager Wayne Beavis said on Wednesday his client was still interested in playing rugby.

One major sticking point with the move is the fact Hayne can’t play for the Wallabies as he has played sevens for Fiji.

That prevents the Australian Rugby Union topping up his contract with any Super Rugby franchise.

But a possible Test against Fiji next year, that could come just matches into Hayne’s rugby career, would provide a marketing dream for the ARU and significantly swell its coffers.

The ARU hasn’t confirmed its schedule for next year, but a Test against Fiji, likely in Melbourne, is sure to garner plenty of interest if Hayne is in the visiting side.

However, such a blockbuster remains only a possibility with the NRL’s Parramatta the favourites to sign Hayne.

But Beavis said rugby wasn’t out of the picture.

“We never talked to the Waratahs, we only talked with the ARU and we remain open to all offers,” he told AAP.

“When the time comes, I will sit down with Jarryd, put all the offers in front of him and he will make a decision then.”

Parramatta, who are undergoing significant governance reform following NSW government intervention, are in no rush to sign their former superstar.

Off-contract playmaker Corey Norman is a priority for the Eels.

But the club is also in no rush to secure Norman’s signature, given he has been suspended for the remainder of the NRL season due to his off-field indiscretions and has indicated he won’t take up a big money move to St George Illawarra.

The Eels are yet to release Kieran Foran from his million-dollar-a-year contract, which would open up the money to sign Hayne.

That release is a formality but the Kiwi international is likely to receive less than the $200,000 severance package he is seeking.

Coach Trent Robinson on Wednesday again ruled the Sydney Roosters out of the running for Hayne.

That leaves Gold Coast and Parramatta as possibly Hayne’s only NRL destinations.

Hayne had previously said he would only rejoin the Eels in any return to the NRL.

“There has been no formal offer from Parramatta,” Beavis said.

Hayne and Beavis met ARU boss Bill Pulver, who said he believed the ex-Eels fullback had a genuine desire to play rugby.

However, many within rugby circles believe the code is being played by Hayne in a bid to drive up his asking price.

Hayne could earn considerably more money in union than league, with a third-party deal of around $200,000 possibly added to his salary of about $300,000.

Hayne could also earn about $1 million a season in Japanese rugby.

But he would have to renege on his formerly stated desire to stay in Sydney and possibly move to Brisbane, Melbourne or Canberra.

Based on my sources and I am never wrong, Foran is as good as the Bulldogs. He is already hanging in their circles.

Trent Robinson indicates Jackson Hastings will leave Sydney Roosters

Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson has indicated out-of-favour playmaker Jackson Hastings is set to leave the Tricolours after the NRL season.

Still contracted for 2017, Hastings, son of Roosters great Kevin, appeared to have a big future at the Roosters after the club opted not to re-sign James Maloney at the end of last year.

The Roosters had backed Hastings to be a long-term halves partner to Mitchell Pearce.

But Hastings has been in and out of Robinson's under-performing side this season and spent the last month languishing in the under-20s, with Robinson preferring fellow youngster Connor Watson at five eighth alongside Pearce.

"Jackson is playing 20s. He has been playing well. He is still spending time with us but we made a decision to have a look at Connor (Watson) at five-eighth and to see how he can play in that position," Robinson said on Wednesday.

"I have been happy with Connor. I am still talking to Jackson about his game and watching his game.

"We will decide week-to-week on what we need but at the moment we feel Connor is our best option there."

The Roosters have recruited South Sydney premiership winning five-eighth Luke Keary for next season.

As a result Robinson said Hastings' future at the club was under discussion.

"That is stuff that we are discussing with Jackson and his manager. He knows where the lay of the land is with us. He is still contracted for next year," Robinson said.

"It is tough as far as the position goes but he is a quality player and he will have a future in the NRL.

"We recruited Luke to play as a five-eighth and for Connor next year it will be a utility role (to start with) and hopefully he will push his way into a starting role."

Hastings has been linked to a return to his former club St George Illawarra.

Bodes well for us perhaps?

Hastings will end up back at the Dragons because they will be desperate after missing out on Norman.
