Sacked South Sydney Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire in frame for top refereeing job

Former South Sydney coach Michael Maguire is in the running to take over from Tony Archer as referees' boss.

The premiership-winning mentor, sacked from the final year of his contract at the Rabbitohs, has been approached to head up a restructured whistleblowing department. Archer is poised to take up the new role of national director of referees, effectively taking him out of the pressure cooker that is overseeing NRL match officials.

While the NRL hasn't made a call on his replacement, Maguire and former referee and video referee Bernard Sutton is also in the frame.

"The NRL is still finalising its referees structure for next year," an NRL spokesperson said.

Maguire was sacked from the final year of his contract after the Rabbitohs failed to make the finals for a second consecutive year.

The man dubbed 'Madge' is close to Parramatta coach Brad Arthur from their time at the Storm and he has been linked to a potential assistant coaching role at the Eels.

However, the refereeing role appears a more likely option, giving him an opportunity to remain in Sydney and again become involved in rugby league.

The development comes as one of the game's most experienced referees, Chris James, launches an unfair dismissal claim against the NRL after he was allegedly sacked without explanation.

Could someone let this journo know that Parramatta is in fact located in Sydney and is involved in Rugby League as far as I know !!

It never suggest Parra isnt in Sydney. Just that the reffs job is in Sydney and more likely option then the Parra one.

Parramatta is 24 km's west of the CBD. I hardly think travel was going to be a deciding factor.
He'll take whichever job he'd prefer.
It was a dumb thing to say.

David Furner seems to have adjusted OK, as has John Cartwright and Mick Potter. It's arguable that Gus has as well in many respects, throw Jason Taylor into the mix. Kearney was apparently pretty good for the Broncos too.

Very good points. Maybe it's not that hard.

So the NRL f**k us over twice then? Take a coach from us and also instruct him to coach the refs to continue cheating us out of games. Lovely. Hopefully he tells the merkins to f**k off.

Where does he live?
It says he get to "remain in Sydney" if he takes the ref job.
Does that mean Homebush (Souths home ground) is more in Sydney than Parramatta?

So Fox Sports have had a stab at what the 2021 Australian team and squad will look like..

As expected, not an eel in sight, yet they’ve got Matt “stalker” Lodge in there!

It's so subjective!! All fair selections, except Apisai, I doubt he will ever play rep footy!

Selection really depends on how good your club side is going.

From our current players I reckon Gutherson, Moses, Norman, Moeroa, brown and Alvaro are all chances if we keep on winning and making finals.

Update - I forgot brown

Sydney as a region branches out to Penrith. Some people refer to it as Western Sydney.
The article is just meaning he is more likely to take the reffs jobs over eels one which means he can stay in Sydney. It never mentions taking the Parra one also lets him remain in Sydney.

Yeah, Nah, Whatever.

You need to read the article and especially the 2 highlighted paragraphs to get the context, not pick single sentences in isolation and interpret from them alone.
