And won nothing, might seem harsh but he should of won one title with the squad he had IMO.
Agree, it was a dynamic spine. Throw in the backline of thompson,Lafai,Brown and its a brilliant 1 -7

Must of fluked the Minor premiership in 2012 then.
The minor premiership goes to the most consistent team, not the best team.Must of fluked the Minor premiership in 2012 then.
Trouble is by the time he was sacked he had assembled almost the whole roster. Too much money was spent on forwards but had some decent backs but had shit halves. Mbye was well overpaid at $700k and both he and Reynolds were not organisers, even Leichaa was forced to play a game of catch and pass. Again he fell into the trap of backending contracts and overpaying players which used up the cap. Did the same thing at Moanly which the club has only just sorted out.
He was a good coach but ran out of ideas a few years ago and is too stupid or dumb to change.
Yep 05 and 99 were probably our best two chances and we didn’t even make the GF.Winning a title takes luck. In 2001 we played a great side. On paper much greater then ours.
In 2009 we also face maybe the greatest squad assembled.
Our best chances was in 2005. We blew it that year.
Isnt the best team normally the most consistent as well????The minor premiership goes to the most consistent team, not the best team.
The best team (if there even is a clear best team in a given year) might have a bunch of injuries throughout the season that hurts their ladder position, but if they get every merkin back for the finals they are a better chance of winning than their position suggests.Isnt the best team normally the most consistent as well????
Just forgot how to coach hey? Or was he a scapegoat? The team he built is looking much better for next year, and Sydney clubs need to go through rebuilding phases. They can’t compete for a premiership every year. Dogs missed the finals last year, the Roosters the year before. Souths haven’t been great since 2014, etc etc. We will go through our own rebuild in a couple of years. Is Arthur a failure if we don’t win a premiership during our window? There will be a bunch of other clubs in their own premiership window at the same time as us.Fact of the matter is Des has been sacked and the team got progressively worse the longer he stayed there and needed to go.
pretty obvious what it wasAnd your point?
You sure do love a scapegoat. The best team (if there even is a clear best team in a given year) might have a bunch of injuries throughout the season that hurts their ladder position, but if they get every merkin back for the finals they are a better chance of winning than their position suggests.

You would have to say he underachieved at Canterbury.
But he did build that Manly side from the ground up.
and its still there now

Sacked South Sydney Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire in frame for top refereeing job
Former South Sydney coach Michael Maguire is in the running to take over from Tony Archer as referees' boss.
The premiership-winning mentor, sacked from the final year of his contract at the Rabbitohs, has been approached to head up a restructured whistleblowing department. Archer is poised to take up the new role of national director of referees, effectively taking him out of the pressure cooker that is overseeing NRL match officials.
While the NRL hasn't made a call on his replacement, Maguire and former referee and video referee Bernard Sutton is also in the frame.
"The NRL is still finalising its referees structure for next year," an NRL spokesperson said.
Maguire was sacked from the final year of his contract after the Rabbitohs failed to make the finals for a second consecutive year.
The man dubbed 'Madge' is close to Parramatta coach Brad Arthur from their time at the Storm and he has been linked to a potential assistant coaching role at the Eels.
However, the refereeing role appears a more likely option, giving him an opportunity to remain in Sydney and again become involved in rugby league.
The development comes as one of the game's most experienced referees, Chris James, launches an unfair dismissal claim against the NRL after he was allegedly sacked without explanation.

Could someone let this journo know that Parramatta is in fact located in Sydney and is involved in Rugby League as far as I know !!
