The old takes longer for front rowers to develop get out clause. If we want to win now and Keppie won't be good for a number of seasons, why give a shit who he plays for next season? "Because then he'd be cheaper to us" - there's years of factors that will determine how good he is and how much he'll cost, and again he's no use to us winning now so who cares?
Plus he's not even the best forward we currently have in his age group or younger. Are you saying we should lose some of those players because you think 5-10 years from now Keppie will be better, when all current evidence points to them being better?
I like Keppie but him leaving is hardly a killer blow nor it is a symptom of some endemic problem BA has with younger players or the club being unable to develop quality players
And since Mannah is on $1M per year, it's obvious that local juniors actually DON'T accept less money to play for us. So there's no need to offer them contracts in the hope that they're good enough in three or four years time.

No. I'm just saying we tend to let a lot of the better ones go. Especially the white ones. There's two real shit hot ones playing for other teams right now in James Maloney and Luke Keary and we let Moses go, but thankfully he's back.

The Storm let Maloney go as well. And we never had Keary - Norths and Manly both rissoled him from their junior rep teams. Both players were moved on. You can't hang onto every player hoping they improve. Come back when you're good enough.

But on our juniors, I think we have really sucked in the art of junior identification. So many good ones have gone through our fingers over the years. But now it seems as though we can't even develop them as often as we used to.

I look at Penrith and Canberra in particular. They seem to unearth a junior every year or two of real note.

It seems you suck in the art of junior identification as well. Not even if they are talented or not, just whether they were actual parra juniors

Who said he was let go?

FFS this attitude shits me (I mean this as a general comment mind you) . What if Manly offered him a top 17 spot and 150k a season? Should we match that for a bloke on potential? Any time someone poaches one of our juniors it's all about how we "let them go"... It's not just a matter of saying "you're ours mate" and keeping these kids forever.

I rate Keppie and I rated Twal. But niether offer anything we don't have already, they're just younger
He didn't even bring him into the development players so from that you can assume he wasn't rated or wanted by BA.

Lol, Keary?

Making shit up now

Ok, ok...maybe not Keary...but wasn't he running around for one of our junior nursery teams at one stage? I'm sure when he first came on to play for the Rabbits, the commentators mentioned that he was from one of our junior teams. And yes I know he was originally a QLDer.

That's because we are in the dead middle of Sydney, and our kids are all in demand from other clubs. Look at Harold Matthews - we win it every second year because most clubs don't give a f**k about 16 year olds. It is when they turn 18 that they can sign adult contracts. So by the time they are SG Ball age half of them are signed by other clubs. We just won our first SG Ball title in a decade, despite winning four Harold Matts titles in that time. The Roosters have never won Harold Matthews but they have won SG Ball three times in the past 10 years.
I look at Penrith and Canberra in particular. They seem to unearth a junior every year or two of real note.
This is because both are in genuinely high quality junior catchment areas - rugby league playing families either live in the country (or Queensland) or if they live in Sydney they are increasingly moving toward the Blue Mountains. Market forces. The real question is why our under 16s are so good. Even the Panthers have only won it once in the past ten years. Canberra haven't won Harold Matts Cup since 1995. I get the feeling we're the only club that takes it seriously.

He was (allegedly) offered a spot in next year's development squad, which matches his talent shown so far. Offering him more would be stupid, so let Manly make the desperation move. They're the ones in cap trouble.

Hills Bulls, but he wasn't good enough for our junior rep teams. What do you do with late bloomers? As I said, he was also cut from other clubs' junior rep teams.

So which development player would you drop for him? GL? Maloney ? Stone? John west? Dane?

There is only so many spots available!!

We had enough guns to finish in the top four last year. So losing a winger (and replacing him with Hayne and Evans) shouldn't be enough to get us the spoon.
This is what the sad part is, we should not be regressing after 2016 and 2017 we should be building and building towards a premiership.

I know it’s early days but to be saying we are to good to get the spook is ludicrous, we should be talking about winning the comp.

We also very well could have missed our premiership window in 2016 but moving backwards after the past 2 years is far from acceptable.

The closest he got was Hills Bulls/Oakhill College. Which is now Manly, I believe, although it's a f**king long time since I was there

Maloney also took a long time to get where he is. Should we have shelved him for that long as well? I’m sure once we dusted him off he’d have been as good as he is now.
Just admit you hate everything of colour and that includes blue and gold

Funny how the club and BA get crap put on them for not keeping our juniors but never get credit when we "steal" juniors from other clubs.

Gee Mahoney / stone and john west are all on development contracts, trained during the offseason with the NRL squad yet none are eels juniors !!

I am sure Tigers, sharks and dogs fans are going to be pissed when that trio are in our 2020 top 17!!
Wasn't John West the one the Dogs rejected?
