Why should we improve every year? Does the salary cap no longer apply to us? There’s a good chance that we got maximum value under the cap last year while this year we are getting less. The idea that a team can just improve every year to an inevitable premiership is not informed by reality. This is what the sad part is, we should not be regressing after 2016 and 2017 we should be building and building towards a premiership.
I know it’s early days but to be saying we are to good to get the spook is ludicrous, we should be talking about winning the comp.
I think it’s very possible. We also very well could have missed our premiership window in 2016
If 2016-17 was a peak then it is inevitable we will be worse immediately following it. That is the nature of a peak.but moving backwards after the past 2 years is fast from acceptable.
Exactly Gazza, you never know how some turn out when exposed to fg. Some thrive, some don't do much and some take some time to become good. I'll mention names of 3 players Parra thougt were not good enough to play fg so let go. Maloney (think may have played a few games in fg), Keary and Moses. During our dark days of winning the spoon we were desperately looking for a halfback to direct our shit team around. Someone decent may have stopped us winning the spoon in those days.Would be silly to select a rookie who wasnt ready but sometimes you get surprised. Youth also brings enthusiasm. They lift. Ive seen it hundreds of times.
Ive followed this wonderful club for 54 years and Ive seen some fantastic rookies grow once exposed to more experienced players. Were they the finished article when given their initial chance? Far from it.
Im old school OA. I think fondly of the days watching the Under23s, the Reserves and the Firsts. Some of the greatest memories I have are spotting a likely junior and watching him succeed.
Maybe those days are gone. Such a pity.
Just my thoughts
Some player/s in our squad must be paid more than we think he/they are as we don't have much money left in the cap and looking thru our squad few jump out at you as champions. Even our halves are underpaid compared with most of the squads. And since Mannah is on $1M per year, it's obvious that local juniors actually DON'T accept less money to play for us. So there's no need to offer them contracts in the hope that they're good enough in three or four years time.
But we have a good amount of first graders, meaning we never have to stick reserve graders (or rookies) on the field. Some player/s in our squad must be paid more than we think he/they are as we don't have much money left in the cap and looking thru our squad few jump out at you as champions. Even our halves are underpaid compared with most of the squads.
Wasn't John West the one the Dogs rejected?
So if we picked a player to debut last season, and they played only one game and played like a busted arse in that game - I wonder if they would have won rookie of the year by default?
Its probably happened before. Some, not so shining lights amongst previous winners.
Goodness Ricky has some issues with 6s and 7s. Austin was talked up for Origin last year FFS.How about this for a swap.
Farrah to Raiders
Sezer to Dogs
Tolman to Sharks
Austin to Rabbits
Fox sports saying its all due to happen.
Wasn't John West the one the Dogs rejected?
No!! He is the gun sharks junior who they were pissed of in losing!! We got under their guard by offering a development contract (or even a top 30 spot), just like Manly did to us!!
And he is only 19 this year!!
Geez, your first sentence was a positive start to that post....................................................Exactly Gazza, you never know how some turn out when exposed to fg. I've done the calculations and I'm certain we need to win 23 games to even make the 8 so it's pretty do or die I thinkSome thrive, some absolutely shit themselves and lose a tight game single-handedly. But surely it can't hurt just throwing the bloke out there to see what happens?!?
Unless, unlike Glenneel, you don't assume we are going to lose anyway. Then what-have-we-got-to-lose? is a really stupid attitude.
Old club product. Shithouse defenceNew club product. The hovermau.
What's the worst that could happen?I've done the calculations and I'm certain we need to win 23 games to even make the 8 so it's pretty do or die I think
In GF two guys impressed me..Keppie and Younger Akafalou.
But I only saw one game. In other games Stone and Mahoney imprssed me
So which development player would you drop for him? GL? Maloney ? Stone? John west? Dane?
There is only so many spots available!!
Obviously if we win those 23 games with the rookies, BA may take that as authorisation to not give wholesale debuts next seasonWhat's the worst that could happen?
I'm going to assume John West means Jaeman Salmon. He was a Sharks player.
