We've tried that with Gutherson. It doesn't work for us, particularly when we don't have a quality 9.
You still need a second kicker. Austin is better at that than Gutherson or French. He’s also a much better attacking player than Gutherson.

It may free up 4 months worth of his contract (July - October) if we didn't pay him out. But I'm guessing we did pay him out otherwise why would he retire? In that case it probably just frees up a top 30 spot to promote someone.

But fingers crossed we can get Lane here early and have him working closely along side Evans

Maybe its a short term fix until juniors come through.
It adds depth, Size in our outside backs.
Still better than Jennings, Mennings, Hayne, Gutho, Hoffman, French.

If its true, Which no one knows cause we seem to be linked to every single player. It tells me maybe a few will be gone, Hayne, French.? Interesting

Is Blake Austin such a bad defender ? He has missed 27 tackles in 12 games.

James Maloney has missed 87 in 14 games. Hunt 53 from 14. Luke Brookes 50 in 15 games. Moses 38 from 13. Norman 32 from 14.

This compared to the top merkins Cronk 20 from 15 and Keary 19 from 14.

Austin is strong enough to tackle
Maloney isnt
In other words Austins can be fixed while Maloneys can only be limited.

Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett warns NRL rivals off trying to sign Broncos winger Corey Oates

Peter Badel, The Courier-Mail
June 27, 2018 6:51pm

BRONCOS coach Wayne Bennett has issued a hands-off edict to NRL rivals amid revelations Corey Oates’ management is shopping the matchwinning Brisbane winger on the open market.

The Courier-Mail can reveal Brisbane’s Queensland rivals, the Cowboys, and Parramatta are circling Oates as a messy management dispute creates confusion over his future at the Broncos.

Off-contract at season’s end, Oates is attempting to sever ties with his current agency GS Sports Management, whose agreement with the star Broncos winger expires in mid-August.

As his existing representatives, GS Sports have emailed Brisbane’s 15 NRL rivals offering Oates’ services, claiming the Broncos cannot table a formal offer to the former Origin winger “at this stage”.

The email has piqued the interest of the Eels and the Cowboys, the latter of whom is under pressure to inject fresh blood to their backline following their horror campaign this season.

With the Broncos also trying to retain Matt Lodge, Tevita Pangai Jr, Jamayne Isaako and Jaydn Su’A, there is no guarantee they will have the salary-cap space to win any bidding war for Oates.

But Bennett dismissed suggestions the Broncos did not want Oates, who just a fortnight ago revealed he had no idea if he would be at Red Hill next year.

“We won’t be losing Corey Oates,” Bennett told The Courier-Mail.

“We would like to keep Corey, but the management thing has to be sorted out and he knows that.

“I know Corey wants to stay, it’s just a matter of us and him getting it (a contract) done, but I have no doubt he wants to stay here.

“We’ll be doing everything we can not to lose him.”

The risk for Brisbane is if Oates’ availability on the open market triggers a lucrative offer that they simply cannot match under the salary cap.

When his current management deal expires next month, Oates will seek the counsel of his father-in-law Gene Miles.

Also Queensland’s chairman of selectors, Miles has no desire to become an official NRL agent and will be only used in an advisory role.

Gold Coast coach Garth Brennan confirmed his club received the email from Oates’ management firm but says the Titans would struggle to afford the Broncos hulk.

“Corey is a very good winger but I just don’t know what we can afford under our salary-cap,” he said.

“We’ve received an email from his management saying the Broncos can’t offer him a deal at this stage.

“But I’m told Corey Oates is sorting out some stuff with his management so it’s all a bit murky … I don’t know what will happen until that is finalised.”

Oates told The Courier-Mail last week: “I really don’t know if I’ll be here next year.

“I can’t really talk to clubs until my contract ends with my management.

“I would prefer to stay at the Broncos, but I’m always open to leaving because that’s part of the game now.”

they'll take pay cuts like everyone else

what salary cap?

Pou, last year you were writing Austin off as a half. I don't disagree. He is garbage.
He was shit until the club might be signing him, now he is a fantastic bargain because the club can ever do anything wrong in his eyes.

Remember when Junior Paulo signed with Canberra he turned to shit overnight as a footballer apparently, was fat and lazy and easily replaceable. Now next year no matter what he will be a fantastic signing. It's what he does, he's the reserve Gleneel.

The amount of his salary minus the amount we end up paying him to leave.

They will if there’s demand for him.

Moses has been dogshit all year, like Norman and the rest of the team. They haven’t forgotten how to play, they’re out of form.
Plenty of clubs will have him at the right price, but will it be worth letting Norman go if we have to pay 2 or 300k to let him go to sign a totally inferior player???

Lets say Norman is on between 800-900k next year and have to pay 200-300k to have him play elsewhere and then sign a totally plodder in Austin 400-500k how is that really improving the side when he's not half the player???? I'm sure you will spin it as a positive somehow with some weird stat of how many games he has played and a % of wins or some other bullshit.

Somehow our recruitment looks even worse for next season than it did for this one.
Does it really?

If we replace off-contract outside backs Hayne, Gennings, Davis and Auva'a with Ferguson, Koribiete, BMoz, & JMoz are we gaining or loosing?

EDIT: added Gennings and Koribiete

I think you've missed the point. Most players have pros and cons. When you factor price in, even the best players represent a potential negative. So just because I point out a player's positives doesn't mean he has no negatives. Ditto when I point out his flaws.

For the record I think Paulo and Austin (if we signed him) would both make our defence worse. But I also think our defence has been pretty good this year for how little possession we've had. It's our attack that needs help, and both Paulo and Austin could add plenty to our attack. And they may both add to our culture as well (though I suspect Paulo is potentially a negative influence).

If getting his influence out of our club improves other players then yes it will be worth it.

Yeah I understand the maths, merkin. I'm a rocket surgeon ffs. 'Swapping' Norman for Austin is about f**king off a dickhead with a shit attitude, not increasing the talent in the squad.
