Replacing back up players with younger ones is a step in the right direction but we are coming last. Our top 17 needs a big upgrade. Paulo is an upgrade in the middle. Austin a downgrade in the halves (compared to Norman). It doesn't move the needle much at all.
We need upgrades at 9, wing, fullback (French isn't good enough and Gutho's best position is centre IMO) and we need another attacking edge forward to have a decent shot next year.
Re-signing Hayne solves either the fullback/wing issue.
I trust we are looking to address our issues.
I don't know about you, but Mahoney impressed me with his limited game time. He's young, and will improve.
Kaysa, too, is young, and was in great form before the injury.
They are each better players at 9 than King or Smith, imo.
I am concerned about potentially losing Norman and replacing him with Austin - I like Austin, but Norman is class (even if his form dips from time to time).
But the recruiting is far from over.
