“The Eels are in danger of losing big man Siosaia Vave for next season.

With Junior Paulo coming back to the club from Canberra in 2019, the Eels have offered Vave a reduced deal for next year - and he doesn’t like it.

Vave’s management has spoken to several rival clubs and there is some interest in the giant front-rower, who has plenty of go-forward and the ability to pull off a big hit. “

Mason said Hasler’s habit of over-thinking footy is what stopped him returning to Belmore to once again turn out for the club he made his debut with and played nearly 150 games for. The big bopper finished the 2015 season with Manly and met Hasler to discuss a possible return to the kennel, where he last played in 2007, but was put off by the coach’s obsession with stats.

“I met Des in Darling Harbour (in Sydney) and we had a coffee and started talking about football and life in general. Then he just, bang, put out this big book with stats on everything. On everything. From f***ing day dot,” Mason said on his Skipi TV show Unfiltered.

“In his eyes, I don’t know if they are twisted or football has just got to him but Aiden Tolman was the best prop in the game. But to me, no disrespect to Aiden, (but) I was 35 and I’d still dust him up.

“In my eyes I’m like, ‘No, Sam Burgess (was the best), or George Burgess at that time’ — they were killing it. I said, ‘Do you ever go by the eye test Des and look at what he brings and what sort of emotion and physical presence, and how much drive he has on the field and how much he can get people going with him, and the leadership skills, instead of finding your front on the play the ball, tackling 45 times?’

“There’s a reason why you tackle 45 times if you’re a front-rower — because you’re a spot player. I don’t get run at 50 times a game because I’d hope to think that I can actually tackle all right.”

Mason said the bizarre meeting was the tipping point that convinced him to head to France and play for the Catalan Dragons in 2016.

Wrong as nearly always Pou.
Actually you sound a bit like old Dessie boy. All the stats and sample sizes in the world, but real feel for the game, common sense and insight, right up the wazoo.
Hasler got to a lot more grand finals than Silly Willie. So did Tolman.

Clubs get rid of players (not re-sign or even release them early) for a range of reasons, including salary cap pressure, attitude, form, and sometimes even because they are blocking a pathway for someone younger, cheaper and potentially a better player.

I personally think the reason the Rooster got rid of Jennings at the end of 2015 was because of the pressure for a first grade spot of one L. Mitchell. That and the signing of Dale Copley from Brisbane.

While it took a while and some juggling around to find a spot for Mitchell in the centres, if they hadn't found a spot in the 1-5 for him, I reckon they may have lost him elsewhere.

Since his debut Mitchell has missed 5 games (in nearly 3 seasons) and 2 of those were for Origin this year. He needed to be found a spot and Mennings was the one to make way.

Nothing sinister in it really.

I reckon they knew they where not getting value from him and his form is very up and down. Was time to freshen the squad and he was least needed.
So the Eels come in.
We get a bog average return from him in 2016 but a great 2017 followed by a disastrous 2018. He could bounce back in 19 but his days as a form centre are gone.

Put him down as another big name flop

Vave has terrible conditioning, whether that’s through a poor application to his eating or poor work by our fitness team, I’m not sure.

Either way it’s no loss if he goes.

Mason is a moron.
Tolman doesn't make 40 tackles a game because he's a shit defender. If that's what Willie thinks then he knows nothing about the game.

Mason did provide a massive attacking threat that is rare and stands out, but players like him need to be covered in defence by the Tolmans of the world. A pack full of Tolmans (Tolmen?) would grind a pack full of Masons out of the game.

If you've got a Willie Mason you obviously use him as a key part of your attack, but strong defence is built on forwards like Tolman. Which is why he's won so many games in his career.

But you can also manufacture Tolmen a fair bit easier than you can Masons. Des is flawed a bit in his thinking in that he didn’t necessarily need to go out and buy Tolman. He could have produced him in house.

Yeh, but he'd have to wait 19 years or so til super-Tolman was old enough to play NRL.

Mason was an arm-grabbed and shirked in defence often.
Was an absolute beast in attack though, but for him not to acknowledge those around him that helped him in defence is disgraceful. I wasn't a fan of his before, but after reading that he's somehow become even more unlikable.

Also I love how he does the old "No disrespect to Tolman" and then goes on to say something incredibly disrespectful.

With respect, you're a f**king merkin.
