To be fair, that was when we were haemorrhaging money at the time and we had our hands full in getting our latest development/expansion off the ground. But the point being, terrible management over the years brought us to that point. It was another missed opportunity to pickup a freebie kick-along courtesy of the State Government.

Who knows, our stellar management may be able to talk the Gov into contributing funds down the track when we are in a better position to build a quality CoE.

Hahahahahaha........I crack myself up.

You are right that we were haemorrhaging cash in 2016/17 and considering the closing date was 31 March 2017 and we were in Administration we were hardly in a position to commit $XX million to club infrastructure at that time. We had a carpark underway, considerable club upgrades and even plans for a hotel.

The club said in Feb 2016..

Once complete, the Leagues Club will have a significantly increased asset base with diversified sources of income, reduced reliance upon gaming and the owners of the Eels NRL franchise will have a financial security and entertainment precinct that will set a new benchmark for Clubs.

Having said that the criteria for a COE (attached) is that the facilities must be for public use, provide junior playing fields and have a viable business model so that the monies raised go back into junior sports etc.

TBH if he have the cash, I'd prefer a private COE like Panthers and Broncos.

The new chair said in August ..

"We as a board know we need to give them something better. The plan is a centre of excellence, but in the interim there are already plans afoot to get the current facilities into a state that's acceptable. That will be something we action. The review has confirmed that. You can take it that's what we'll do.

"The goal is to have a centre of excellence in five years."

Even a team not from NSW (Raiders) got the NSW State Government to cough up more than $4 million for a training ground.

Actually you are probably right there. I too would rather we own it outright like the Panthers and Broncos. Lets hope that we get something at least as good as those two. Hopefully even better since it will be at least 5 years away. We must always strive to do better and be better then our competitors.

The ACT Gov are putting in $5M as well. The NSW Gov agreed to the $4m because the bulk of the Raiders side comes from NSW regional areas. So investing in a COE fits the criteria of promoting NRL youth development within NSW. They could have insisted that the CEO be built in Queanbeyan, however the $4m NSW are contributing represents only 20% of the development cost. So they had no hand. By contributing however they can ensure that NSW regional are being looked after.

Unless you're an international you'd be hard pressed to get a position in the top 17. If you were an average player looking for a chance of a spot you'd be looking more at the lower teams.
Actually I just remembered Murray Creighton already going there. Where does Tapau even fit in.
