Rumours and Stuff

I said it for this year and I’ll repeat it for next...

We won’t make the 8 if French is our first choice fullback!!!

I’d be ropable if we let Gutho go for anywhere near $50k (the supposed difference from what we are currently offering) if the alternative is Bevan f**king French!!

Not even for one season?

Assuming a high-calibre fullback is available for 2021, and Gutherson leaves, I am sure it would be a sensible long-term decision, rather than throwing money at anyone to fill the gap.

Mate, I’d say the sensible thing would be to not let him go now for the sake of $50-$100k, in light of the fact there are no better options on the market, to essentially write off another year in 2020, in the hope a decent option becomes available AND is willing to sign with us in 2021.

Well, yes, of course - I agree.

But if the club stands by their offer, and he leaves for more money - who else can we go for?

Maybe we make Hoffman stay for another year, and offer him the fullback gig?

So what fullback options are there for 2020, assuming Gutherson leaves?

Ferguson is not a fullback.

We currently have:

Hoffman
French
Smith (lol)

Who would we sign to replace King?

That’s the issue...if the club are stubborn and stand by their offer, they obviously think he isn’t going to get any better offers. If he does receive a better offer and decides to leave they would have really cocked this one up as we definitely have the cap space, have no real options within the squad for 2020 and there aren’t any better options on the market.

They are playing chicken for the sake of $50-$100k with our captain who is the future of this club and also happens to play in a spine position.

I don’t like it one bit and I can see this going pair shaped very quickly.

So you want to waste another year (2020)? There are no good fullbacks available for next year.

While I get what a lot of folk are saying here Re Gutho's limitations as a player... The thing I'd be disappointed with if he chooses to leave is the mentality and dare I say it, the cultural qualities we'd be letting go. We've worked hard to unearth some good young leaders at the club and he is obviously numero uno in that regard... For the sake of 50K per year, if that's what it is, I think it needs to be carefully considered what non-footy qualities we're forsaking if he walks away...

Don't think anyone wants him to go, but Ayoub is playing the long game, using the media and basically prepared to play chicken with his own player and the club.

Not sure where it's going, but sort of have to want the club not to bend over. It's that simple, if Gutho wants to be captain, and wants to back up what he often says about playing for the club, maybe it's a good idea if he actually went a bit on the front foot and got his manager to get the deal done. Then again, I have no idea the mindset of that generation, their attention span is mosquito like , so he may be prepared to sit back and accept whatever.

Spot on mate. For a club that was quite open about needing to change its culture, you have to question how we can let a player go who exudes exactly the type of attitude, work ethic and personality we need to build the club around.

Well, that's why I'm asking.

We currently have Will Smith, Bevan French, and Josh Hoffman at the club, who can all play fullback.

Rather than spending money on a new fullback, perhaps we would be better off retaining one of these guys...

Fair enough.

The Storm are different Pou. They’d make French look like Semi.
How about the third placed Rabbitohs, with Johnston? Or the fourth placed Raiders with CNK? Or the fifth placed Eels with Plod Gutherson?

French would be a very good fullback behind a strong pack. We could spend our money there instead. And Moses is a more important re-signing than Gutherson.

I was about to suggest we should go after Christian Welch, but I just had a quick look at how much he was after and it is being reported that he is looking at around $600K. To rich for my blood, but he would have been a good get.

Closest post to my thoughts.
If you are the captain of a club, and you genuinely want to stay, why hasnt he been more vocal in the media and shutting down the speculation?

I like Gutho. He is my favourite player, but the days of me investing anything emotional into my favourite player are long gone. I am basically already over him. Its just business.
I absolutely detest that Sam Ayoub guy, so there would be massive upside to Gutherson leaving.

Hope for his sake he doesn’t pick up any serious injury anytime soon.
