Rumours and Stuff

Here is my take on the Gutho contract saga:

1. We low-balled him late last year (which was the right thing to do given 2018 form of the whole team)
2. He said "no" and "I would rather prove I am worth more with my 2019 performances".
3. In March he said "I want to know what's happening with BA before I decide"
4. In April we upped our offer to mid $600's (I am led to believe about $630k) for 3 years
5. His manager started asking for $700k and a 4 year contract, to which we said "no"
6. His manager kicks off media frenzy hoping to get us panicked
7. In late April we provide our "final" offer of $650k for 3 years
8. Manager now wants $750k for 4 years, claiming Manly are keen
9. Media mates push the Manly are keen story
10. Gutho's manager realises Manly aren't keen at $750k and no one else has made an offer
11. Gutho announces he would be happy with $650k for 4 years realising that we aren't budging on $ but maybe we will move on length of contract

And here we are today - waiting it out to see who moves first.
Does the club offer 4 years or does Gutho accept 3 years....

I said it ages ago the whole 3 or 4 year thing for club should come down to how insurance/cancelling contract works with his injuries, because realistically he isn’t going to be a worse player in that 4th year than he currently is (unless he is injured)

The Greg Inglis precedent suggests you get paid top dollar as an ambassador or some shit and your club gets all that salary cap space to sign another origin replacement

I don’t know. It’s probably only because GI is a good role model and top bloke

If the issue with Gutho is 3 or 4 years then why doesn't the club offer 3 years with an option in the club's favour for an additional year. If he is backing his ability and is confident that his injuries aren't a problem then he should have no issue signing...
An option in the club’s favour is worse than no option at all, from the player’s perspective.
