That is exactly the problem. To have your very best players "not too far off the pace" is nowhere near good enough to win a premiership. I realise that we can't just go out and buy two origin-level forwards and one origin-level halfback or five-eight tomorrow - but it's what we should be aiming at. It's what we need. (What every serious contender needs.) And I sincerely hope the management at Parramatta have the foresight to realise this and to plan for it. Here's hoping.
A good start would be to not renew any contract for most of the players off contract at end of year. Those very few we re-sign should have the amounts paid to them reduced to the appropriate level to justify their playing standard. We can assemble a good roster without TPAs if the existing players are paid less than they currently are. After all, which other teams would want them?

An 80 minute middle forward should be making 40 tackles. Any less and he's not working hard enough while on the field.

In my opinion the number of "tackles" is a totally irrelevant statisitic in RL. I don't know how it became a measure of anything. It is in fact possibly a sign that the attack disrespects the defender.
The rugby league fan gets given useless statistics on which to try to have a debate about defence.
The eye test says our guys are pretty bad at tackling/wrestling technique but what statistic shows that?
Who are Parra's best and worst?

I guess when you are a player looking for that $1m pay packet, being in a side with Cherry and Turbo might make it very hard to happen.
I know it probably wont happen, but imagine a 2021 forward pack of:

8. Junior
9. Reed
10. N Brown
11. Lane
12. Niukore
13. Jake T

14. Schneider
15. Kaufusi
16. Stefano
17. ???

If the young guys reach the heights some are saying it would be a somewhat vast improvement over what we used on Thursday night.

Mate his name was given to me 2-3 weeks ago as someone on our radar that we would spend big on and were building a war chest of funds for.
Like I said, highly unlikely but good to know our recruitment team are thinking about the right players to chase.

He possibly has a good relationship with BA.

If we could strip the weight off Alvaro and get him back to 2017-18 performances he would be a solid option at 17 to provide some experience off the bench.

This is pure wishful thinking but this would be an incredible side in a few years:

1. Gutho (c)
2. Sivo
3. Salmon
4. DWZ
5. Fergo
6. Drown
7. Moses
8. Paulo
9. Mahoney
10. Nrown
11. Lane
12. Niukore
13. Jake T (c)

14. Schneider
15. Kaufusi
16. Stefano
17. Alvaro

For an edge defender that might be the case, as weak links are isolated and targeted, but in the middle defenders aren't isolated. Instead high tackle counts are an indicator of a defender working hard to help his mates and get numbers into the tackle. This leads to slower opposition play-the-balls.

On the defensive side control of the ruck is a team effort, not an individual thing. But getting numbers into the tackle is a sign that a defender is working hard to help his mates instead of standing there watching, or shuffling back into the line for the next play.

Probably want a player capable of playing edge on the bench, but wouId be a good side.

I know Salmon is mentioned as a centre, but wouldn’t mind him as an edge forward (or some time there). He obviously has some skills (passing and kicking ) in being able to play 5/8 which wouId probably be wasted at centre, but could be used on the edge - like a “Wade Graham” style role.

Good point about an option on the bench to cover both the edge and middle. Mau will be 32 for most of 2021 so he could still be an option or I guess Tep could be extended but I see him more as depth and not a part of our strongest 17.

I guess we could go to the open market for another genuine edge option and either Niukore or Lane could be used as the edge/middle option on the bench, but I’m not sure we’d have the cap space after going all out for Jake T.

For mine, Salmon has more of a centre’s frame, at least for the next few years. Perhaps when he is older he could transition to the second roe ala Chris Lawrence.

Fun factoid - Wade Graham was halfback and captain of Penrith's 2006 champion Harold Matts team. Lachlan Coote and Matt Wright also played in that team. For the losing Bulldogs their only future first grader was second rower Martin Taupau.
