But what about when the people who have studied stuff and worked in that area their whole lives disagree with others who have done the same? Then you'd probably look at conflicts of interest.

Maybe not many but backups aren't the only players who ask for a release...Addin Fonua Blake is a prime example..there will be more

Sure but do you really think we'd be looking for players for our top 17? From this week's 17 we're losing Evans and possibly Davey and Smith, but Kaufusi comes straight in for Evans next year. A genuine first grade calibre utility for the bench would be nice, plus another edge forward. That's two potential top 17 spots but I also doubt we've got the cap space.

Yep. Behind every idiot 'refusing to settle for mediocrity' and demanding a scapegoat is the vain hope that sacking the right person will turn us into a force.

These clubs that are pushing for top four every year were built slowly over a long period of time. Three top five finishes in four years is a decent start, and we're hopefully where Melbourne were in about 2005 (i.e. a few years away from getting caught cheating after four straight grand finals):

2001: 9th
2002: 10th
2003: 5th (WL in the finals, going out absolutely smashed by the Bulldogs)
2004: 6th (WL and smashed by the Bulldogs again)
2005: 6th (WL)
2006: 1st (WWL beaten by Brisbane in the grand final)
2007: 1st (WWW)
2008: 1st (LWWL 0-40)
2009: 4th (WWW f**k their eyes)
2010: 16th

But we might be more like the Roosters somewhere around 2010:

2007: 10th
2008: 4th (LL)
2009: 16th
2010: 6th (WWWL heavily beaten by the Dragons)

But really, we don't have the resources of these two clubs (although the Broncos do - how f**king embarrassing).

If we need a genuine backup then we probably do want an 80 minute hooker. Then we replace like for like. Will Smith isn't our backup hooker. He is an impact utility who can also cover the halves and fullback.

However some of those available players would probably cause a fan meltdown if we sign them ( Tolman, peats, Cartwright, Levi, Cogger, Taylor , Lafai , plus a bunch of rookies) not realising they aren’t top 13 signings.

Anyhow we are probably in a good position, fringe players may prefer us as there is a greater chance of playing finals then some other sides.
