At the time we didn't have a decent rake who could win the scrum count. It had cost us big time in the previous few seasons. We kept losing the scrum possession most weeks and it was very difficult to beat the top sides with a 30ish-40ish% scrum deficient. It was evident that we needed to at least be able to get 50% of the scrum wins if we were to win a title. Hell we had come so close on numerous occasions so little possession but unfortunately couldn't get the bickies.

Then we got Edge and the rest is history. Today though, we are replacing one of the best dummy halves coming into his peak years with a veteran on his last legs that may or may not be up to it. Massive difference in situations. Time and luck will be the judge on this one. Odds are that he will have health issues and not play as well as we would like, but you never know, we might just get really lucky. Fingers crossed.
I think Hodgson will hook the scrum better than Mahoney. He seems scrawnier so the props can probably take his entire weight which will let him dangle freely with both legs to try and pilfer

By going for the old soap dodger and not Verrills, I'd say we are looking to promote from within in 23/24, so perhaps we see one of these kids as being an NRL quality hooker and if we sign Verrills we lose one or two of them.
Also possible that Roosters see B Smith as a combined 9 and 13 and want to keep Verrills to come and replace Smith so Smith can shift to 13. If they have convinced Verrills they have a plan to use him in FG, he may not want to shift away from the Rorters. Especially when we don't have too many good golf courses around Kellyville.

Yep, wouldn’t be surprised if Roosters still have Verills in their plans. They are loathe to letting anyone of value leaving, particularly in a position that a) is currently in high demand and b) they have particularly been cursed in with injuring over the past few seasons.

I doubt Hodgson is coming to us for anything other than a starting role do I agree he’d be on an above average amount. Assuming you are correct I don’t think anything around 400k is a low risk signing at all especially when their form has been questionable. Paulo on the other hand has been in great form, is a current origin player and would only be 32 by the time his contract finishes if he were to re-sign for 3 years so I don’t know why you would think he would be too much money.
Do you think Paulo has no upper price limit? Or do you think we could sign him for the same amount we're paying Hodgson? I think you're missing the point of unders/overs and value. This isn't about comparing who is the better player, it's who provides the most value. A player worth $600k is obviously better than a player worth $350k but if the $600k player is getting $700k and the player worth $350k is getting $400k who is providing better value? What is the opportunity cost to the rest of the squad by having that player taking space in your cap?

It's simplistic to just say X is a good therefore he represents good value. It entirely misses the economic aspect of squad composition.

Good point.

Yeah I don't see why merkins think the Roosters will only want one NRL calibre dummy half in their top 17.

They signed Verrils for 4yrs by memory so they must rate him highly. He spent a lot of time injured also. He also wouldn't be breaking the bank. The only reason they'd get rid of him is if they thought he wasn't good enough. So perhaps its a double edged sword.
B.Smith makes a great 30min hooker and 30 min lock. That give Verrils plenty of game time.
