15 of them at centre. That's his only decent position and we already have 2 of them.
He is a footballer. His best win rate is actually in the halves. Just stick him anywhere on an edge and let him run and tackle. He'd make a pretty good edge forward.

Its a bit sad our front row could be Stefano and Kafusi. But at the sametime are they better then Jnr or RCG? Both cost to much much be bench players now. But combined would cost about 900k vs 1.3 mill.
From what Insaw with Kafusi trial was more power and leg speed. But I noticed in the past he starts the season strong then seems to wane come mid season and drop off.
This might be the year he maintains his form.
I still don't put him at Stefano's level. I'm predicting big Stef to play origin this year. The kids the real deal.

A mate of mine who has had a bit to do with him over years reckons he has a great work ethic and is an extremely motivated individual.

Saw some recent photos of him - he is looking very good.

Jack Bird would cost how much? Is he better then retaining Matterson?
I reckon that Matto is pretty one dimensional and Bird offers utility value. I know that many see him as a centre, but is there really much difference being one in closer to the ruck ?

There’s very little reason to lament over it. Right now we’re better placed with Junior/RCG as props and the others are better placed going elsewhere

Jack Bird is a top player and had a solid injury free 2021. We all know that the Eels will not pay overs for him or anyone these days. Think of him as a Will Smith utility. Come on down.

Mate apparently he wasn't happy with the $400k offer the Saints were negotiating, so I don't think he would be happy with the < $200K that I think at this stage of his career he is worth. His injuries make him way too much of a liability and he will never be the player he once was. He will not be able to hit the line like he used to. I think his value now is as an experienced and semi talented first grader that would be a fringe 1st grader in a strong team. But always one bad collision or tackle away from an injury that others would normally get up and play on with.

This has to be factored into any contract deal.

He played 22 games in 2021.

Don't care. That was probably his purple patch as far as being free of injuries. Regardless I don't see him much more then a decent 1st grader now a days and that to me means he would be worth around $300K, but with the injuries thing always present, his value diminishes somewhat to around $200K.

He’s an idiot if he genuinely knocked back that offer from the dragons. I’d much rather Matto on that kind of coin.

I reckon we want to keep Matterson, but he thinks he is worth more then we are willing to offer. But no other clubs think he is worth his asking price either. I reckon he will stay.

Bird injury free is a great signing (obviously not on overs), good player and covers a few positions..

both ensures we have edge depth (which the 2023 squad lacks) but they don’t necessarily need to play there….

If we managed to sign both, our 2023 squad is looking pretty solid and won’t exactly be a rebuilding year as claimed by some. It wouId potentially even be better then 2022 with Hodgson / Bird added experience and our younger rookies, a year more experienced…….

He's only played as an edge forward 4 times in his career for 2 wins and 2 losses. I really hope we aren't buying him for that position because he won't be coming cheap. He's probably an ideal utility off the bench but I doubt he'd be keen for the role at around 300k.

I think it is still hard to replace Marata and Paps.
In particular if we get injuries and our depth is tested.

Another youngster needs to step up to replace Kaufusi.

If we get Bird, it replaces one of them.

Atm, for 2023, we are down Matts, Marata, Paps and Kaufusi

Four games is a small sample, and in any case he played centre when he was faster and more agile. With him slowing down, a move to edge forward is a natural progression, especially now the game is faster.

The game is faster, he has slowed down, lost a lot of his natural lateral movement and is injury prone.

Hmmm...remind me again why we would sign him and don't give me experience? We have plenty of that and getting more and more of it as every game passes by. Besides will he be healthy long enough to help out with all that said experience on the field? Probably not.

It's only 4 games because it's not his best position. Just because he is injury prone and slowing down doesn't mean he will be a good edge forward. How much would you pay him to play out of his natural position?
