What is interesting is that we were told ad nauseum on here that it was imperative for BA to be locked in late last year to provide certainty for the playing group in recruitment negotiations. However, since BA was extended in October we’ve lost pretty much every top 17 player off contract including niukore, Paps, Mahoney, Stone, and Kaufusi, with the exception of Drown who took up his player option off a pretty ordinary 2021. Furthermore, Matto is looking doubtful beyond this season.

You look at the coaches that these players would be playing under at the time of their signing (with the exception of Stone) and it highlights that the coach isnt the magic silver bullet in contract negotiations we were led to believe and I hope the club learns from this going forward.
i get your point - agree I think its shit it didn't work in our favour with papa (and mahoney, marata) ..... but its not quite pretty much every .... gutho, rcg, junior

I think it highlights that we have Set values on players which we won’t move on in our pursuit of not getting in bad cap shape again.

Niukore wanted to return to NZ.
Ice got offered ridiculous money and the tigers will likely regret the decision this time next year (as will Ice)
Ditto for Mahoney
Stone - take him or leave him.

In fact I think it is a very minor consideration. I hope the club learns from this going forward.
Nobody said the coach was the silver bullet for recruitment (look at the Dolphins) but it would certainly be a factor. Why would want to sign for a club that hasn't even decided on a coach yet? It's not a good look.

My point is that the coach plays a very minor part in recruitment and retention imo. The three players you mentioned that stayed are all on very good coin.

There’s no certainty that coaches see out their contract, particularly at shit clubs (Bulldogs case in point). I don’t think that issue plays a very big part in negotiations.

That’s fair but not particularly relevant to my point.

3 on the cusp of Origin and 2 that don't qualify but will be in the NZ side.

Surely you can see the talent?
I think it’s a good attacking pack but there are much better defensive units in the game. I’d rather be like Penrith or the Chooks, with a lightweight pack that defends well and outside backs to provide the go forward. It suits the post-2019 ruck better.

Well that’s the point. Coaches change regularly at shit clubs. The uncertainty is a feature of those clubs. As for the players leaving, only Stone is going to a club with a great coach, meaning the others must be motivated primarily by money. Are they the merkins you want when constrained by a salary cap? There’s no benefit.

All three have proven their quality over multiple years. They were our three best players in the Panthers final as well.

Well I’d argue that highlights they’re all motivated primarily by money, which was my point.

I’d say players signing or re-signing with Parramatta in 2022 aren’t necessarily motivated by money. Players signing with clubs that haven’t made the finals in years are a near certainty to be motivated entirely by money. The exception is Kiwis going to the Warriors.

Players need to be careful because Addo-Carr's move has proven fatal to his rep career.

We’ll have to agree to disagree on that.
