I might be the token Christian in this group but the usual homophobic/bigot online rampage misses the mark. These blokes do not hate homosexuals and they are no doubt happy for everyone to go and live as they please. For people of faith, they buy in to the faith so to speak which means we accept for ourselves that we will not partake in some activities that are common in the world. It's not for us to judge the world, it clearly says it in scripture, we are to judge ourselves and not the world. Whilst everyone seems to focus solely on homosexuality when it comes to Christian beliefs, the standard Christians believe is a lot narrower where looking at a boob is sinful.....looking at another woman with lust....Jesus words.... yep, I fail daily in that department, already have and it's 7.30am.
So these blokes may have no issue with how others live their life, they just don't want to promote that which doesn't align with their view of the world. They don't hate homosexuals just as they don't hate anyone having sex outside of marriage or looking at porno, they probably don't want to promote those things either.
Pride is something spoken of in scripture to turn away from. I know Pride in these terms is focused on homosexuality but being prideful for those of faith is something to turn away from and seek to be humble.
Now I know alot of what Christians believe and what they 'do' is often worlds apart and we're all hyporcrites at the end of the day, what I want to do I don't do, what I don't want to do I keep doing. Paul even says this and it's why we have faith in something greater than ourselves but thats for me to decide.
My view on homosexuality differs from alot of Christians and I get pushback from within the faith also but thats another story.

I'm very pro-LGBTQI, but this is a storm in a tea cup.

Those 7 players do not hate homosexuality; they simply feel uncomfortable wearing a jersey that promotes something that they feel conflicted about, due to their religious beliefs.

Tbh, I had a much bigger issue with Israel Folau using social media to push his Christian views about homosexuality - that was more far-reaching, and offensive.

I don't think politics should mix with sport, anyway, and if it does, players should reseve the option to respectuflly disagree with the decision to promote a cause they don't agree with.

I've actually met Josh Aloiai, and he is a very humble person; I would be genuinely surprised if he had a hateful fibre in his being.

I agree they shouldn’t be forced to do something against their religion and the heat they are receiving isn’t warranted. But reading comments that conflate the tribulations of Christians with those of non-straight sexualities or indigenous or other minorities are ridiculous

Totally agree. There are alot of fickle Christians who claim this as persecution or reading some bad words about them amount to persecution. We're not being fed to the lions or used as human torches like the first Christians and we're certainly not facing what alot are over seas.

As a Christian I am sure you are fully supportive of inclusion, acceptance and tolerance ?

"What would Jesus do ?", is a very powerful interrogation.

End of the day you get paid to do a job, your contract doesn’t state you get final design sign off on your uniform. Wear it or find another job.

The players are not being expected or forced to get up and give a speech about inclusivity and LGBTQ rights, they are being told to wear an alternate uniform for 80mins that their employer has decided to implement. Wear it and shut up.

I guess it comes down to whether people see it as promoting homosexuality (or just superior dress sense), or simply accepting people regardless of their sexuality. They possible could have avoided a lot of this by not calling it a 'pride' jersey, because this doesn't make a lot of literal sense to a person that does not the possess the attribute of which they are purported to be proud. I'm certainly not proud of my homosexuality because I'm not a homosexual. Obviously 'pride' has taken on a much broader practical usage though.

Yeah, I don't see the fuss about this, tbh.

We've been flat out robbed, and in bigger games:

2006 - Final against Melbourne, Morrison scores in the corner; vision of the grounding is obscured by defenders; goes to video ref (before the days where the onfield ref needed to make a call, prior to sending it for review); video ref looks at footage 20 times, and claims no try - despite the fact that the rule states that if there is doubt, the benefit of the doubt goes to the attacking team; if they reviewed the footage 20 times, they clearly had doubt

2021 Final against Penrith - dubious high tackle penalty, allowing their trainer to slow the game down when we were on the attack

2009 Grand Final - Slater dropped the ball on halfway cold; Moimoi was penalised, they march down field, and Inglis kicks the field goal

Why not allow both?
The Pride jersey has 6 stripes across it that have been coloured from white to 'rainbow' colours. Why not just let the dissenting players wear the normal white striped jersey? It won't be confused with the oppositions jersey.

The club should just have come out and said to all players "As a club we are supporting 'gay pride' this weekend by changing the white strips to colours on our jersey. If for any reason you are not comfortable wearing this, we will let you wear the normal jersey, but as a club we want to show our support for LGBTQI+ community, so we hope you will all get on board."

No news story if they had done that.

They definitely should have marketed it more as an acceptance thing, rather than pride.

I reckon there would have been news stories after the fact -" 7 Eagles players refused to wear the rainbow! "

Or not have made a jersey at all but supported in some other way that players could choose to decline without it being obvious.
