If they couldn't sort out the Klem deal for next 3yrs just sort out the rest of this yr and play happy negotiations again in the off season. It's not that effn hard
The player presumably has a massive contract for next year, the last he will ever get. There aren't many incentives for him to terminate it early other than being offered even more money over the next two years. The offer to renegotiate at the end of 2022 (after giving up his 2023 money) would be the absolute worst option for him. Great for us (and the Knights if they could get him off the books next year) but awful for the player.

Yeah issue is he was signed for something like 800k and nobody now would pay more then probably 300k.
It wouldn't be worth Knights paying 500k and trying to find a guy for 300k.
Only way it would of worked is if we paid maybe 250k this season and 350k next. Knights then get 600k and only out of pocket 200k.

Management absolutely terrible signing and retaining players. They get bullied by Guthos manager into paying overs for many years must his use by. Lost key players. Whole player retention this year has exposed. Crap.

What I find odd is why did it come down to the last day? Did BA only just realise he needs another prop?
Could of tried to sort something 2 or 3 weeks ago. Its clear Makatoa and Kafusi don't offer the punch he wants. That's why they don't get long minutes.

You might be semi-literate, merkin, but at least you understand how shit works. Must be why you're a powerful millionaire.

Yeh, but it takes 2 to tango. The Knights may only have been willing to let him go for 2022 if we took over at least the majority of his remaining contract.

Actually Barry, if that is your real name, we wouldn’t have had to take over any of his remaining contract. We would’ve offered him a completely separate contract.

However in practice, Klemmer would’ve then return to Knights and said “they pay me this much, you pay me rest (in an agreed manner) or me stay on your books for rest of contract.”

To which of course the Knights would say “This contract? Why it’s not worth the paper it’s written on!” and torn it up in front of his face.

Valid but probably another poor performance by our team heading up retention and recruitment. Did we Lowball them? Most likely.
Recent track record seems pretty piss poor.
I think someone else mentioned it but probably best summed by we couldn't score a root in a brothel with a fistful of hundreds.

Yes, but the effect is the same. Special K is not going to forgo his rights under his existing (or non-existent) contract without commensurate return.

As I schooled Barry, in your scenario that would have left Klemmer with no contract for next year. Do you reckon Klemmer would be more comfortable with his current guaranteed contract, or at best renegotiating a lesser contract going forward?

Its basic common sense. I reckon the bigger issue is Klemmer only wants to play 2 more seasons and then hang up the boots. He started footy young and I don't see him playing into his early 30s.
If we threw 250k to them this season and 300k-350k for the next the deal probably gets done.
Problem is in 2024. We may have a few young middles ready to roll that the club rates. And with RCG,MATTO,JNR all signed for another 4 seasons our middles quite stacked.

Think the knights wanted the coin to top up Brooks

Yes but that is his decision. The Knights don’t care how much we’re offering him. They’re just negotiating with Klemmer how much they pay him out or whether they force him to honour contract.

As i mentioned get this yr sorted. It helps Knights to the tune of $200k. It doesn't nullify the remaining 2 years. In any case that may have been the sticking point.
Why we decided the last fkn day to identify someone else after Tapau was supposedly a done deal on Friday is another stark reminder how woeful and utter incompetent our recruitment is.
We don't even have 30 players in the top 30.
What sort of shit show is this?
A number of personnel need to be held to account and be shown the door..pathetic

It came down to the last day because we didn't need to fill the 30th spot until today. I'm sure they've been looking at options for weeks or even months. But all the good players are already under contract, so getting them requires three parties to agree (both clubs plus player). What's surprising is that any deal gets done at all. The Roosters and Storm must have some kind of sweetener that stops them having to pay too much under the cap.

Dunno, but what's your definition of low-balling them in this situation? I certainly wouldn't want to pay Klemmer anything like $800k per year. You're better off doing nothing than eating a bad deal. Certainly I wouldn't be sending Wiremu to either of these teams if that was in fact what was being contemplated. And we can at least use the extra cap space to front load renewals if we are able to execute them.

Plenty of people only exist to complain. I'm sure that if we, say, signed Klemmer and he did an ACL in his first game, we'd have been idiots to have signed him.

I assume this is what Barry meant.

Barry would never say anything like this though.
