One thing this discussion proves is that most young merkins never make it. Both my brothers almost did but fell short at lower grades. Not because they weren't good enough, in both cases they had to make a choice between getting a career and playing footy for f**k all money in lower grades. (this was early 2000's)

That’s a perfect reason, for when they raise the cap by $1 million or so soon, they should instead make NRL squads 40 players (plus 5 development players on $50k) and make the the minimum salary $80k….

if will help develop a lot more players, especially the late bloomers that need a few years to develop but have to choose between feeding themselves or pushing ahead with footy (like your brothers)…a lot of these players quit…

Rather then just increasing the salary of our best, which doesn’t help develop our pool of players

Yeah and so am I but the Ram was something else. Something special. His posts where full of detail and 95% of the time he was on the money. If only he ran our club. I tell you now I'd be confident of a dynasty.

I’d make the minimum salary even higher than $80k. Not every player outside the top 17 has parents living in Sydney (or wherever their club is located) that they can stay with.

Because you’re right, if the cap goes up by $500k (for example) the majority of the increase will go to the top 20 or 30 players in the comp. Most players would see f**k all extra money when the cap goes up unless the NRL agreed to a decent bump to the minimum. But it’s up to the RLPA to push this, and since it’s dominated by senior players they don’t really give a f**k.

Wasn't the min wage about 100k? Maybe they dropped it.
I think 100k is fair for top 30. 80k is probably better then a lot of jobs but banging your body and not having a weekend? Not great.
