That's an interesting one on 2023 form I haven't watched enough of Yates.

If you were going to start Hands as your main hooker and have someone play 20 off the Bench you would have to pick Hodgson as his defence couldn't be that bad against tired players..

But then you could go with Yates and hope he develops into a first grade player.. waffle over

It just shows how bad Baldson has been if people are even contemplating this. He’s been an embarrassing bust so far and the scary thing is he is getting worse.

I honestly wouldn’t know who’s better but I know the game is to fast for Hodgson and it’s not waiting for him. And I def know he’s not the answer or the future.
Thanks guys, however I am really keen to get @Legal Eel 's response as it was he who made it clear that Hodgson is not in our best 17 and that Jayden Yates should replace him, ergo he thinks Yates is a better player than Hodgson and by extension I am guessing he thinks that Yates is one of our best 17 players.

I'm sure they knew. They just seem to forget about all these variables when it's time to find somebody to blame. A bit of amnesia creeps in until you bring Captain Obvious out to remind them that things aren't that simple.
A Captain Obvious who knows how to express concepts without aggressive aggravation, or twisting his own message into knots...? I'll look forward to that 😂

When is the last time we attracted a marquee player to the club - Foran in 2016? We don’t even seem to bother anymore.

Embarrassing when you consider that Souths have managed to attract 3 of the biggest names to the club - Inglis, Latrell and Wighton. We seem to always have too much money tied up when superstar players become available.

You'd also have to consider who they lost. I recall Gagai and Reynolds recently. 2 origin players. Crighton not that long ago. Douhei, Allan who started time many rated.

Oh they aslo signed Arrow.

i re read his comments and he hasn’t once said he’s better. He said he may handle it off the bench and there’s been inadequate planning since rheed left. If Hodgson was the plan, then the plan has failed miserably. Hard to argue with his comments. The club has f^*led up big time. Not sure how it’s defendable

You give Hodgson 4 or 5 more games and see how he is going and how our seasons also going.
If pear shaped still you dump him to the bench of NSW CUP amd let him rot and hopefully leave. Clean the rubbish out for 2024

The thing is NSW CUP is full of junk. There isn't anyone bar Morretti that should be considered for NRL.

Actually he said that Hodgson wasnt in the best 17 players.
I asked him who he would replace him with and if you are replacing someone not in your best 17, then logically that person would be better than who you are replacing. His answer was he would give Yates a go at replacing Hodgson therefore the only assumption to make is that @Legal Eel thinks that Yates is better than Hodgson (and if he doesnt think this, why would you replace Hodgson with an inferior player?)

Maybe emjaycee is fishing for a "gotcha" moment - bit of an obsession on this site - but forgot to properly bait his hook?

2001 and 2005 were really the Premierships that got away. 2009 and 2022 we were well underdog in both encounters and unlikely to ever get the victory over a more experienced grand final opponents. 1998 we were unlikely to have won the GF had we made it, and it would've ended much like 2009 and 2022.
We’d beaten Brisbane twice in 98 including the major semi. I felt we had their measure.

Yates is unable to force his way into the 9 spot at NSW CUP level. He is keeping Moimesea company on the bench.

We will need to recruit a hooker or if we decided to use JA who in all fairness is a far better option then Yates then we should put him at hooker in NSW CUP for a month and see how he handles it.

Not at all.
I am just trying to understand the logic of a poster who is adamant that BA needs to replace Hodgson but doesnt offer a suitable alternative.

Well it's a bit late now but there should of been better options then what we went into he season with all things considered.
Hands could of also not of been any good. Probably still not enough game time to see if he is good enough yet.
Rein wasn't considered last year. He is not good enough and we knew that.
Guys like JMK or Lidde would of been handy. And neither would of cost much more then back up money.

He has only made five errors in seven games. It's not a stat that hookers typically accumulate a lot of, which is a big part of why the position is important, given they literally touch the ball more than anyone else. The only one in the top 50 in the NRL for errors is Mahoney.

As for penalties, it's tempting to assume that they are all accidental negative outcomes caused by ill discipline, but if you look at the top 50 most penalised players you'll see plenty of smart, experienced operators there: https://www.nrl.com/stats/players/?competition=111&season=2023&stat=1000026

In the last three games he's played, he has 1 error, 1 penalty conceded, and 1 ruck infringement ( six again )

So one negative play / match.

Maybe he's on the improve with game time, and maybe confirmation bias is playing it's part regards to merkins having made up their mind with a few poor performances early on.
