Norman should be next captain and Gutherson should be considered his understudy IF he makes a successful transition into the halves. If he doesn't he may become a bit of a nomad and if that were the case it would make it much harder for him to be the main leader of the team. Captains need to be stable entities within the squad in my opinion, not players who can't hold down a permanent position within in the team. But that is a subjective view and it will all depend on how good and valuable he is to the team no matter where he plays.

But Norman is by far the best option as it would cement him as the leader that Arthur wants him to be. He is the best talker in the team, has great energy and is our main playmaker. He needs to be given the extra responsibility to grow further as an all round footballer and I feel BA knows this also.

With Arthur's tutelage and Norman's progressive maturity, Norman could become one of the best players, if not the best, we have ever bought from outside of the club who was already an established player. He ticks all the right boxes, but only time will give us the answer.

Attitude/maturity has been the only thing that has held him back. This coming year will be the defining season that will be the making of Corey Norman as not only a very good playmaker, but a leader of boys/men that will define the rest of his career. I for one can't wait to see what type of butterfly this grub/caterpillar turns out to be.

Norman is way down the pecking order after his annus horribilis 2016.

Gutho is the opposite of Norman and has the on field work ethic of a leader and the off field presence as a club representative.

EELS’ PAIN TO CONTINUE

It seems the script has already been written with ‘redemption’ the theme many are expecting from Parramatta in 2017.

After a mass clean out of both the roster and the back office, the Eels are hoping a fresh start equals a first taste of success since they last made finals in 2009, when a purple patch from Jarryd Hayne very nearly delivered a shock premiership.

The pack looks strong, the outside backs are lethal but Brad Arthur’s spine is looking shaky, and as we all know, it’s the spine that delivers results.

The combination of Bevan French-Clinton Gutherson-Corey Norman-Isaac De Gois won’t be good enough to put the Eels in the eight.

I don't disagree with your sentiments of Gutherson, but Norman is, at this stage our main man. Without him, we have no chance at winning the big one. And as we all know a lot of the bad boys end up making the best leaders. He is, I feel, exactly one of these. He needs to be made the big banana. He will thrive and flourish if given the right environment and extra responsibility. To over look him for captain maybe seen by him as not having enough faith or confidence in his man/game management. This could then affect his progression and see him continue fading into and out of games. Not feeling the love has affected many and he is no different.

Personalities like Norman want to be centre stage. They thrive under the limelight of success and they crave leadership. To deny him, is to hobble the drive to be the greatest, that most sports personnel strive to be.

Think he already showed that in the home video he made earlier this year....

We finished 2016 with a winning record (and inside the 8, sans point penalty) despite a list of injuries, controversies and general bullshit that some clubs would struggle to fit into their entire history, let alone the 12 months that we did. Our recruitment quietly went about filling some noticeable holes in our squad and we have a handful of core players that are set to make a big leap forwards as they mature as footballers. The legal cloud hanging over Semi Radradra's head is our only real concern, albeit a very serious one.

I know that making the top eight is far from a gimme for any franchise outside of Victoria but to say that we are being slept on is a considerable understatement methinks.

Sorry Bro, Ray Price took a back seat to Mick Cronin and Steve Edge. You don't need to be a captain to be a better player.

Isn't there also a legal concern over Kenny Edwards?

I reckon he will escape conviction. Unless there are witnesses, intimidation and an allegation of drink tossing does not rank high up the scale. I'd say that his counsel will already have him doing anger/alcohol courses before he hits the courtroom. Even though he has priors, he has been out of trouble for a while blah blah.

Re-signing Gutherson was very important. I think he will definitely start at 6. His defence in the halves will be a massive advantage. In this category I think he is equal to Foran. There will be questions about his kicking game but there also was with Foran and we seemed to go ok before the meltdown.

We can be the surprise of the year then....though you just know that if we do make the Finals, then they will all act like they knew it would happen all along.

I do normally love being the underdog, but that's what we've been for the last decade and I'm quite sick of it now. I long for the days of being the favorite again.
