Im not worried about hooker ... i think degois is better than people give him credit for
Bevan is a class player - plenty to learn but he is very good
Of the spine players, I would say the biggest question mark is Gunco ... but i also think he is quite possibly the biggest surprise packet and wouldnt be surprised if he makes a real go of it

De gois - Good tackler, tough player. What he is good at is niggling and slowing play down when need be to give team a rest. One thing Peats was average at.
He however cant open a defense up running from dummy half like a segyaroo/Granville and he has no kicking game like say a Farrah/Ennis. He is a one dimensional hooker. Peats hailed the next best hooker in the game by fans on here was tough and pulled off bigger hits then de gois. Not a better defender thou about on par. He was more of a threat from dummy half but not a dynamic runner of the ball and also had no kicking game.

The question is what does de gois cost and what would Peats cost? At a guess I would say de gois is not costing a lot more then 150k while Peats would demand around 400k. Peats is a better player. He is not an elite hooker thou.

The guy we missed out on when we did sign De gois was Granville. Broncos would not release him mid season. And was our first choice. That's just the way the cookie crumbles.

As far as Kaysa goes we really do not know his quality. He has mainly played out of position and when he had played hooker its been limited minutes. Last year was his first year in a while he remained injury free for the bulk of the season. People give up on players to easy.He is aggressive, fast, motivated and strong. I wouldn't be shocked if he started the season as our 9. And if De gois was signed as more of insurance like Robson.
BA has a history of weening players in and holding them back giving them limited roles until ready. Just like Tepai-Alvaro-French etc....

If injury free, I reckon Pritchard will be our number one hooker by the end of the year. And he can attack and defend.

And everyone will be praising him!! Just like they were for Gutherson last year

There is a reason panthers got rid of Segy who was one of their better players. He is a bad influence!! Poor trainer!!

Duke doesn't f**k about - He will cut overpaid stars just like he did lewis-jennings-grant-Pritchard-segy-soward-roberts-Idris

TBH he is quite ruthless like that. I feel we are a bit soft on our team. As far as culture long term goes thou short term pain for long term gain.

Guys like Hayne when wanted out should of been told not to come back period. The end. Rather then milking us to get a better deal elsewhere.

I think the key for Gutho to get a pass mark in the halves is defence/kicking.

We already know he has some decent attacking skills / ok passing.

He needs to be able defend in the halves, which I think he will do fairly good. He is big (for a half) / fit but also pretty mobile so should be able to defend there.

But the most important factor which is also the most unknown is his kicking game. If he can't kick then he will be pretty f**ken useless in the halves. We cannot have only one kicker in the side, it makes it too easy to target norman. So can Gutho kick?

Gutherson will be fine if our forward pack can roll the other teams. Dominant forwards and quick play the balls. Feed the backs one on one - Taka-Jenning-Bevan-Semi can create if have space. As can Manu.

Short inside balls to the forwards - backing up play will be his strengths. Hopefully they work on his kicking game.
Can Bevan kick the ball long?

King is a terrible defender and BA seems to want his hooker to be a very good defender.

I know a coach in the NSW Cup who does ridiculous amounts of video work and stats analysis. We were talking about a few reserve grade players and he mentioned King was one of the worst defenders in the NSW cup. His effective tackle percentage was around 30%. Whenever his team come up against Wenty they always highlight King as the man to target in defense because he is that bad.

That's f**ken terrible!! Most NRL players rating into the 90's.

With that rate he aren't playing NRL again!!

You sure that's correct ? Or does he mean misses 30% with effective tackle rate of 70% which would still be terribly bad for anyone wanting to play NRL!!

So why did we give King 1yr extension? Injury prone as well.
Wenty should be full of guys who could be potential first grade players or are able to fill in if need be.
And id say everyone in our wenty squad fits this bill. Unlike wenty of 3-4 yrs ago.

Someone needs to play dummy half in reserve grade and he does have some potential.

Doubt he is top 25 but.

I'm calling bullshit on the 30% effective stat....that would get a reserve grade half back dropped in group 8....

But yeah king is definitely pretty rubbish defensively

Robson at hooker would solve the extra kicking duties- Can play 80 mins and know how to steer a team around.

An option for sure

He's a brave defender but not up to playing in the middle for 80 mins. Nor would he want to for that matter I don't reckon. I think we might have created a problem that doesn't really exist. Don't forget Taka can kick a bit.

If Gutho has been able to develop a kicking game it won't be an issue. If he hasn't then we'll need some options, but really it's a case of waiting and seeing more than anything at this stage

I probably didn't word that right. When I said 'effective' I meant he 'wins' the tackle 30% of the time.

See my previous post. I should have explained it better. By effective I meant 'wins' the tackle around 30% of the time.

Whilst our defence I have no doubt will be at least as good as last year, I think not having a gun hooker will be ok. In terms of attacking weapons (players who make something happen) I think in the 17 we have:
Semi (Curt case pending)
French
Jennings (Full off season, speed speed speed)
Gutherson
Norman
Manu (That offload)
Frank Pritchard (More offloads)
Edwards (Tackle buster)

They are first standard IDG / Pritchard are as good defensively then any hooker in the Comp. Yeah IDG attack isn't the greatest while Pritchard's has potential.

BA has choosen defence over attack for his hookers. That is why king won't get a start over Nelson until his defence improves.
Their service is both rubbish IMO. IDG's defence is great but he offers little else. Kaysa is very nippy and hits hard in defence but I don't think he will be anymore than a back up bench dummy half. King is easily the most talented and skilful but sadly he tackles like Luke Burt. As I said all of them are barely first grade.
