Was he ever actually that good though? Has always made a hell of a lot of errors, and been a hot head.

He is (or was) above NRL average in terms of pure ability. But he hasn't put himself in a position to use it, and possibly never will. If he goes to a desperate club he'll continue to regress. If he goes as a 'depth signing' to a better club, or as cover for a long term injury he might just turn it around. The errors and hothead stuff can change as one gets older. Not saying they will.
