I would say Norman is now a "specialist" halfback. Just because he has worn 6 on his back doesn't meant he hasn't lead the side around the park like a "traditional" halfback.

And he has been great at that role!! Gee he probably goes close to winning the daily M last year if not suspended.

Gutherson has potential (and probably already is) to be the style of player you think "Norman" plays.

I know Norman is good. I'd call him a specialist five-eight (but we won't go into that). I just think that he's played his best football partnering someone in the halves who is less flamboyant and more workman-like. I think he did better with Foran, Robson and a number of makeshift halves than he did with Sandow, for instance. I know halves tend to play mostly on opposite sides of the ruck these days - but they still effect each other's play. They are still a partnership. I feel that Norman would perform better with a methodical halves partner. Someone like Hodgkinson or Adam Reynolds, Chad Townsend maybe. I just done see Gutherson as that sort of player. I can see our attack being quite confused at times. I hope I'm wrong though.

Who really is talking about Fogarty as a starter? Apart from some posters ?
From all reports from TCT who attend training the halves will be Gutherson / Norman unless there is a disaster.

But they have also reported Fogarty is doing everything right.

I doubt Fogarty is any chance of starting the year in the NRL with Robson in front of him if there is a disaster.

But this could all change with some good consistent form in nsw cup during the year.

Well go and take it up with Emjaycee...he's the one who had Fogarty in the 7... I just asked him a question..

Whats peoples thoughts on matterson?
He is not what we needed, but i see potential as a ball playing lock perhaps. Seems to be a guy where things just happen around him.

Attack wise 2016 we ranked in bottom 4 sides in line breaks, try assists and line break assists.
Sure it was a disrupted season but our attack need work big time.

Current NRL doesnt really have a ball playing lock .... it has a middle forward who is practically just another prop - and some of those guys happen to have an offload

The edge forwards can be a bit of ball players .... but they also are expected to be good ball runners, good lateral movers in defense and tough as brick shit houses .... matterson could perhaps be one of them but he's not really built like a brick shithouse

So matterson is kinda in limbo as far as what position he should play .... back in the 90s he probably would have been hot property

Yes ... but we were beyond disrupted ... we hardly had the same halves for more than 2 straight games

But - food for thought - did he play worse partnering Sandow because Sandow's deficiencies put more pressure on Norman?

Sandow had a tendency to not put in on defence (we all know this), and he also was rocks or diamonds in attack; I reckon this put a lot of extra pressure on Norman's shoulders.

I have all the faith in the world in both Arthur (a man with integrity, bleeds blue and gold), and Clint Gutherson (a true professional, and a genuine footballer; not as athletically gifted as a Semi Radradra, for example, but supremely fit, possessing a fantastic attitude, and always working hard on his game [which, imo, is the true measure of a great player; Cronk was slightly above average when he burst onto the scene, but he worked hard on his game, and became one of the game's elite halfbacks]).

I just know that Gutherson will make the number 6 his own, and will help Norman's game immeasurably.

I've always liked him, but not in the halves.

He could turn out to be a similar style of player to Bryce Cartwright.

Yeah it wasn't terrible but it wasn't great either.

As you mentioned there were some good excuses too, the Foran issue, Norman not having a partner to build a combo, Norman suspended so playing 1/3 of the Comp with our second combo, reserve grade halves both injured.

But I think one of the bigger factors was, is not having a ball playing fullback.

Bryce is a powerfull runner and his ball skills are insane. His issue is he becomes to pass happy, thou playing half the year in halves didnt help him.
Matterson thou could learn 2nd row and have a nice pass rather then offload. People put to much restrictions that a half must be the guy setting up line breaks and tries or each position has a certain role.

I don't think Masterson will ever be an explosive runner, but he has some slick skills, and could be a Wade Graham style of player *albeit, not as big) on the edges.

I was sad to see him leave, tbh.

I dont think he was a right fit for our team. With Friend roosters have an attacking 9. Pierce an organiser....
