And an awesome cut out pass.

He couldn't tackle and his run game was like watching a turtle.
Yes he come on with a bang his first year. Then sides started targeting him in defense. And when he had the ball they knew he was basically a one/ two trick pony. They held off instead of rushing up so it killed the short kick and cut out pass.
I honestly don't think he would of kicked on. And certainly wouldn't of cut it in the current game where players are bigger and stronger and better defenders across the park.
I think he was always going to get flushed out of the game tbh.

What makes Cleary,Moses,Brown,Munster,DCE,Hunt,Luai etc all special is firstly they can defend very well. Perhaps Hunt isn't greatest. But they also can run as well. All have very good run games. Borderline excellent,None have weaknesses at all.
None have a cut out pass like Tim Smith but Ash Taylor I saw as very similar. Also flushed out.

If we didn't shit the bed and won in 2005 you still reckon he would have been flushed out as a premiership winning halfback at 20 years old.

He may have grown in statue and kicked on. Between say 2005-2016 and forged a great career.

Cronk didn't have running game early on but developed his game piece by piece.

I suppose we unfortunately had no idea of his bipolar issues either and will never know if he could have turned out to be one of our better halfbacks since sterlo.

We were broken in 1998 and then again in 2001 young fella.
Too young for 1998.

2001 hurt but I was 7 years old.

I remember the train back to seven hills after the game i just thought we would make the GF every year we were so dominant that season we were unstoppable and just keep it going in 2002.

I didn't realise back then how hard it was to win a GF and as a parra fan I hadn't really endured any hardship we were still a good side from 99-01 making finals every year.

I suppose when we eventually win one it will make it all the sweeter.

and who would that better player be ?

no one in our current roster
It doesn't have to be a better player, it just has to be someone you want in the first team. In this case I don't think Sanders is a better half than Gutherson is a fullback, but if he was then it would make sense to move Brown to fullback and bring Sanders into the halves.

The club has a history of choking in big games. And now under the Bald bandit we have gone to another level of choke. His failures to motivate the team in big games is legendary.
Classify choking in big games for me.

My understanding it is only when your heavy favourites and bottle it. Like 2001 & 2005.

Last year's GF was woeful but it wasn't a choke. We were $3.25 outsiders.

I would say the only final we have lost under Baldy when favourites was 2017 against the Cowboys. What other finals have you thought we have choked in.

2019 we were simply not good enough side against a superior Melbourne side.
2020 we had a 2nd string backline thanks to injuries and a dope in Jennings crueling us on game day failing a drug test.
2021 we were dudded

All of those losses we have been heavy underdogs heading into the game and i think the only one as underdogs we have managed to win was last year's prelim against the Cowboys.

With a bit of luck we should have pinched 2 more wins in finals. Melbourne 2017 QF and Penrith 2021 SF.

BA's finals record is poor but he should be closer to 50% if you have reversed those close results where we got dudded.

Round 1 2002 when we won 66-6 would have only reinforced this belief... I think plenty thought it was a fait accompli we'd win it that year after that... that was the best moment of season 2002 unfortunately....

My best mate is a Penrith fan, we watched that game together. I rubbed it in deluxe that day after the ribbing he gave me after the 01 GF which coincided with my massive hair loss. He joked to me after they jagged the GF the next year and said "I thought we would never beat the Eels in a game again" He brought that game up again after last years GF. Long story short short f**k Baldness and Penrith ffs!!
