I've given up on predicting how our team will fare as long as Potato Head is still the coach. It's like the proverbial box of chocolate, you never know what you are gunna get. But what is almost certain is that once again our defense will be sh*t. That I can almost guarantee tear in year out. Watch our ruck defense and then our defensive indecisions and bad read out wide, not to mention the terrible overlaps and beaten for pace moments too. When we get found out, we get brutalized and embarrassed badly, by fast and switched on teams. That hasn't changed in years and I can't see it being much different with what we have for next year either player or coaching wise.

So as long as our defense is sh*t, then no matter what else we do, even if we win most games and make the top 4, it will mean f**k all as far as winning the premiership goes. As we all know or should know, the team that has the best or second best defense almost always win it in the end.

We haven't successfully addressed this aspect of our game for over a decade, except for the odd decent defensive season here or there but couldn't sustain it long enough to get the rest of our game right to actually have a good red hot crack at winning the damned thing at long f**king last!

I think most of us already know, it will be just another also ran season, with some impressive highlights and some depressing low lights thrown in as usual. But that Premiership, well it won't be happening for quite some years still I'm afraid. Maybe your grand kids will experience the joy of winning the Premiership as an Eel supporter, but most of us here will need to feel that joy again from Heaven or Hell depending on the direction we take on our journey into eternity.

No defense, no Premiership. Period!

I'm confident we go ok. Potato Head has to make sure Matterson gets 65mins being our best defender. Lane defends well also and helps.
I think our poor defense was due to lack of effort and laziness a lot of the time rather then guys not being good defenders.
We do however need to hunt like a pack and attack in defense like the Panthers do. That's how they win games.

And why they have the best defense.

I know we will be ok as long as we don't have injuries and suspensions like we had this last season, but will we have the best or second best defense? That is where all the difference in the world is made. Being a distant 3rd or 4th best defensive team won't win us a premiership, let alone being even further down the list.

We need to be 1 or 2, that's it and then we need to be able to sustain it over a good 2 or more seasons to get a proper shot at winning it unless we get lucky to win it at our first attempt when/if we reach that class of defense.

I'm over being an also ran Hindy. We have been that for almost 4 decades now with no end in sight.
