So sad. RIP Bob Bugden...One of my first heroes at the Eels.
Bobby had a great combination with Leo Toohey (5/8) and Kenny Thornett.
He followed his Dragons' coach and captain Ken Kearney to Parramatta where he played a further four seasons, (1962 - 1965) often as vice-captain.
The little halfback gave great service for the Parramatta club, playing in the team that defeated South Africa in 1963
Bobby made his state representative debut in 1960 and again represented for NSW from the Parramatta club in 1964. In Bugden's representative career he was vying against the incumbent national half-back, Queenslander Barry Muir, who was generally preferred by selectors. At the latter end of his career Arthur Summons was the Test half.
Bobby was picked for the 1959 Kangaroo tour and played in five tour matches but no tests
. He was selected in the 1960 World Cup squad and although he did not play in any tournament matches, made two tour match appearances for Australia after the World Cup.
Bobby made his Test debut in the 1960 domestic series against France for the 2nd Test in Brisbane. He scored three tries on debut in Australia's 56-6 routing of France and backed up for the 3rd Test where he again crossed for a try.
Post rugby league , Bobby worked in the club and hotel industry before real estate sales
Bob Bugden's NSWRL first grade career spanned 12 seasons and played 209 games for St George and Parramatta
He also played 11 representative games for Metropolis, NSW Colts, NSW City Seconds,
NSW Firsts, NSW City Firsts and Australia
* When Bobby joined the Club,...Second picture - Congratulating Mike Jackson scoring the try that toppled StGeorge at the Sports Ground 5-2 in 1964. Bob kicked the conversion from the sideline..(can remember it like yesterday)
I also recall the semifinal at SCG in 1963, when Bob took a penalty shot for goal - it bounced off the posts and Ron Lynch backing up, pounced on the ball and scored under the posts to give Parramatta its FIRST EVER semi-final win, 9-7, over Balmain Tigers
