I don't think there's ever an assumption that a bloke in his mid-20s will get worse.
I said COULD.
He might get replaced when a younger backup with more potential needs his spot,
ipso facto the younger player (but who said they had to be younger - we went and signed Davey mid year) has at that point exceeded the quality of the other. If the first player was 30th of the top 30, well then he become 31st when someone overtakes him…
but that's nothing to do with the established backup losing ability.
Is Moimosea an established backup? It’s also not necessarily about losing ability. For Moimosea it’s been about applying that ability.
Melbourne usually have a few older guys in the bottom of their top 30. Everyone except the recent Panthers squads really.
Do you think Melbourne and Penrith view the players at the bottom of their rosters as permanent top 30 quality or do you reckon they understand there’s a bit of fluidity in player’s quality?

Yeah I getcha, but given plenty of things COULD happen, I don't think recruitment/retention is conducted on the basis of what could happen. They look at probability; what is likely to happen.

After playing his one warm up game in NSW Cup, Davey played every subsequent game in the NRL. I don't think he was signed as a backup. I reckon he was a low-cost (and therefore high value) member of the top 17.

Right, but if his quality hasn't changed then it just speaks to the quality of that squad improving. If player 30 truly was top 30 quality before then he should be able to get a spot at another club, especially in this new 17 team situation where there aren't 510 players of top 30 standard to go around.

He has been a full time professional since 2019. He's no park footballer.

I'd say those clubs have enough resources that they do have top 30 quality right through their top 30. Merkins might go up and down the pecking order, but that's about the emergence of youngsters and needing to make space for them in the roster.

Wouldn’t it depend on which club the ‘average coach’ was working for? Ricky Stuart’s record is very different at each of the clubs he’s coached at, as is Cleary’s. If Brad Arthur coached at the Tigers he would likely never make the finals either. At the Roosters/Storm/Panthers he would probably have won a premiership.

you might be correct there however you also need to bare in mind that those clubs you mentioned had the same coach lead them to their last 3 premierships.

Foxsports have written about about every club’s premiership window. TLDR; lotsa clubs can win it in 24 or 25. Some have a larger window into 26, 27 etc.

Here’s the Burramattagal boys…

Analysis: The Eels were one of the biggest disappointments last season going from the grand final to miss the finals. The club struggled to replace a host of stars after a club exodus most notably hooker Reed Mahoney and second-rower Isaiah Papali’i. Dylan Brown’s suspension didn’t help the Eels’ cause, but they weren’t playing at their best even with their dangerous half in the side and the pressure will be on him and Mitchell Moses to deliver results after both signing long-term extensions. The club have invested heavily in the pair to the point they have lost a number of other players and the onus is on the two playmakers to deliver on their big pay packets. The club have bolstered their depth with the signing of Kelma Tuilagi and Morgan Harper from Manly. However, with Josh Hodgson retiring the Eels still look short an elite dummyhalf and it is up to Brendan Hands and Joey Lussick to fill the void. The Eels have a quality roster, but after 12 seasons Brad Arthur is under pressure to deliver a drought-breaking premiership or it might be time for the club to go in a new direction.

Premiership window: 2024-2026

That’s just silly semantics after I responded to you saying something would happen.
After playing his one warm up game in NSW Cup, Davey played every subsequent game in the NRL. I don't think he was signed as a backup. I reckon he was a low-cost (and therefore high value) member of the top 17.
So he definitely moved ahead of Moimosea in pecking order.
Right, but if his quality hasn't changed then it just speaks to the quality of that squad improving.
And if one player is no longer up to the new standard, then he is no longer top 30 quality.
If player 30 truly was top 30 quality before then he should be able to get a spot at another club, especially in this new 17 team situation where there aren't 510 players of top 30 standard to go around.
Then he’s free to go play at those clubs who have a lower standard.
He has been a full time professional since 2019. He's no park footballer.
Half of which he was injured or there was no comp. Can’t even establish his best position in reserves.
I'd say those clubs have enough resources that they do have top 30 quality right through their top 30. Merkins might go up and down the pecking order, but that's about the emergence of youngsters and needing to make space for them in the roster.

Genuine cassette that one. Copped a hiding back in the day.
