not to mentin the fact that we just don't know how good he will be

not all juniors translate into class NRL players

I think we've gone with the "bird in the hand" attitude as we know just how good Mitch and Dylbro are

I spoke to a trainer of another NRL club last week and he specifically brought up us retaining Moses, even though it dragged on a bit. He reckons it’s definitely the right move despite the wraps on Sanders as who knows what he turns out like. Said he thinks Mitch is currently the second best halfback in the comp. His words: there’s an absolute shortage of quality halfbacks in the comp, you have guys that would be reserve graders in days gone by playing at halfback for a lot of clubs.

There is stuff all around really. Halfback is one of positions that takes 5-6 years for players to get there. And with the lack of quality halves coaching in juniors its becoming harder.

Clubs, coaches and fans ain't patient enough to go through the hardship of a 5 year wait to see if the halfback will come good.

Souths punted Reynolds for Illas and the jury is out 2 years on if it was right move. It may have cost Souths a premiership.

DCE has actually got better as he has got older. I don't think Manly regret that contract anymore they probably curse the fact Tommy Turbo cant get himself fit.

Look at the Dogs they can't buy a half to save themselves and have instead bought all these utilities.

Dolphins are stuck with O'Sullivan who is toiler but no world beater.

Melbourne had to turn Jahrome Hughes into a halfback after Brodie Croft turned out to be a dud.

The jury isn’t out, it was a horrible decision. Reynolds played the best season of his career in 23 and souths missed the finals, largely due to having 2 erratic halves, you can live with one, but not two

True but $500k isn’t elite money. It’s probably on the low end for a starting halfback.

We do not know if he is a starting HB just yet.

Canberra could be investing 500k per season on a reserve grader.

However the market demands clubs, especially lower clubs take these sorts of risks.

Even at 500k per year there will be expectations from Canberra. Or any club willing to take the plunge.

However if Sanders can do the bare minimum in FG 500k in the current market is a bargain.

There is zero evidence for this.

Sullivan at the Riff
Cogger at the Riff
Burton at the Riff
Katoa at the Riff (even though I think he jumped ship too early and will tank)

All were at the panfers and developed next to Cleary.

There are plenty of stories of halves leaving their current club too early to get a chance at another club and then thier careers going no where..

Ash Taylor even though he did play over 100 games went to the Titans too early to lead a shit side and it ruined his development in my opinion.
Stick at the Broncos develop into a first grade halfback then take the offers.

The kid who went to the Dogs from the Broncos even though he currently is injured will be lucky to play 50 first grade games as his development tanked going to the dogs.

Obviously. The point is they aren’t paying him as a reserve grader (or he would stay in Sydney). If they’re paying him more than a reserve grader they are making a commitment. Whatever they are paying him they don’t have available to pay competitors at his position.

He isn't a starting halfback at all 2-3 years away.

It's fine for Canberra to throw 300-500k.at him as they need to fill their cap and if he plays ok they have found their halfback.
If it doesn't work out they won't re-sign him and his career has gone down the toilet.

The point is there is alot more risk for Sanders going to Canberra instead of sticking at the Eels developing then having a choice at clubs.

Good luck to him with Ricky. He will be behind 3 halves if he goes next year and not have an elite halfback 5/8 and fullback to learn from.

Lol what a ego bruise for poor old Reed.

Dumped as captain after 1 season.

Whats next getting shipped off before his contract ends.
The greedy little f**k had everything at Parra. Better system, more chances of winning the comp, solid third party deal from one of our own but left for more money.

Take that you little cauliflowered sook.

Sanders is 21 next year ffs, and could have a full year of reserve grade under his belt. It’s a risk for the Raiders, but close to zero risk for the player. His talent won’t disappear in Canberra. If he doesn’t make it, it’s because he wasn’t good enough.

A lot of downside.

Pretty sure Burtons original deal at the Dogs was for around 600k per season.

Burton came with FG experience and a proven track record of being capable to hold his own in FG. Sanders comes with hype.
Burton's first year at the Dogs and Sanders’ first year at wherever he ends up in 2025 are three years apart. The money values aren’t directly comparable.
