I don't think he can at this stage of his development. That's the problem, impatience. Playmakers need more time and development than any other position on the field. To soon and you can cook them well and truly.

How much patience does he need ffs? Sanders turns 21 next year, when he will potentially join another club. Of the 17 first choice number 7s last year, six of them (over a third) were NRL regulars by the age of 21. In fact five of those were NRL regulars by the age of 20, including Cleary and Walker, who were first choice halfbacks by the age of 19. It hasn’t ruined their careers at all. If you’re good enough you’re old enough, and if it turns out you’re not good enough, it won’t stop you getting another chance later on. Hastings was run out of town for being a toxic f**kwit on the piss, but his talent never left him, and now he is at least a solid NRL halfback.

Only five of the NRL starting halfbacks last year weren’t NRL regulars by the age of 22, so being a late bloomer is the exception, not the norm. These are the facts that will drive Sanders and the cubs hoping to sign him, not pissy Eels fans pointing out how Hughes, Hynes, Fogarty, Townsend and O’Sullivan were happy to bide their time. They waited because they had no choice, not because they thought reserve grade would be good for them.

22, and won a premiership that year. He was so good he could obviously have started younger, but Manly had Hodkinson and Foran as their halves in 2010.

How did they get DCE to wait? Maybe there was no demand for him at the time he signed that 2010 contract. But by 2012 there was a big stink about how he was underpaid. Looks like Sanders wants to avoid that fate, and why wouldn’t he?

Hunt was 20 and Reynolds 22, in the year they became NRL regulars. Though Hunt actually debuted the year he turned 19.

If we circle back, my argument is to try and keep him at the club. To make the pathway attractive to him rather than throwing him in at deep end at another club.

You on the other hand want to trade him now.

All I am saying is that it would good to convince him to stay and if we need him to play NRL this year then he can for a game. That’s not cooking him, so frankly I don’t know what you are talking about.

No my preferred option is to keep him at the club, but short of this season it will be near impossible, so if there is an advantage for our team to trade him now then I would trade him now. The Raiders would find out quick smart that he isn't ready for NRL this season anyway. So I doubt even the Raiders would be silly enough to persist with him in the NRL for this year at the very least.

Well maybe that's partially why we don't have that many quality playmakers in the NRL. Remember DCE was 22 when he finally made NRL and even though Cleary was in his teens, he was a bigger body for a half so that is a big part of why they need to wait and physically be ready in the lower grades but he also was not the main playmaker and was not for the first couple of season in the top grade while just playing to develop his defensive skills and then do the occasional kicking and playmaking while Maloney did most of the hard and heavy lifting.

Now how many teams have a real quality half that they can stick a young green rookie in next to him and not fu*k him over? Oh and a good enough quality team that also helps him not get annihilated by all the traffic coming his way?

He would have gotten there a lot sooner had he been playing for a decent team from the start, but alas he was playing for those derp Tigers. The club that almost guarantees you never play finals footy. They should slogan that and plod lovers like Pou will flock to there side.

I know that it seems impossible to keep him, but I listen to merkins like Brent Read and randomly he says things like “Parrramatta are confident in keeping him”. So lots of mixed messages out there, but I wonder if Dylan is our long term fullback X guy and then maybe we are selling a future to Sanders ? Dunno. Anyway, at the very least it will good to have a decent half in reggies this year. A competitive NSW Cup side makes a confident club IMO.

Normally clubs try to transition the opposite way! If we have him living up to potential in 6 that’s more important let’s then focus on a specialist fullback (when it’s time).

Yep. The only way he moves to fullback is temporarily through injuries. Talk of moving him to fullback to accommodate Ethan sanders in a year or two is comedy.
