I think Gutherson is conflicted, and Flanagan's acknowledgment that Gutho has to decide whether he wants to stay or go is a strong indicator of that. It doesn’t seem like he’s being pushed out at all. Ryles is simply being thorough, waiting to make any decisions until he sees Gutherson's performance in 2025—similar to what Flanagan is doing with Ben Hunt.

I reckon Flanagan doesn’t want Gutherson for 2026 unless he gets him for 2025 as well. That’s what he means by Gutherson needs to decide if he wants to leave Parramatta.

Maybe they weren’t on as much as merkins claimed they were. Both players are 32 next year. They could’ve been on discount rates. It’s not like guys in their early thirties are in high demand.

Put it this way, would you pay top dollar to a player in the year he turns 32?

Gutherson has a decent contract for 2025 and should try and test himself for a reasonable extension. It’s not like he won’t have an offer in England where he will kill it.

Problem is that the north of England cannot compare to the northern beaches.

Reading into the interview with Moses I think it’s now more likely that Gutherson will leave.

That’s the vibe I got also.

I don’t think Gutho particularly wants to leave but if he can snag a 3 year contract with the Dragons it would be the logical thing to do.

Knowing Gutho though I think part of him would be burning to come back next year, show how much he is worth to Parra in whatever position that is and earn an extension. At worst if he comes back and gets injured/stinks it up he would have England to fall back on for 26 anyway.

I agree. But a couple of weeks ago, when I said basically the same thing, you (politely) assured me that Gutho wouldn't be with us in 2025?

Our recruitment knows who the good players are, and they understand young players improve. It’s why we signed Moses who everyone thought was a downhill skiier who couldn’t tackle. At the time that’s what he was. But his defence is solid these days and he proved in Origin he can step up with a good team around him.

So we know the quality of players. The reason we’ve won nothing is because we can’t fit enough good players under the cap. It’s why after the 2022 grand final we lost a quarter of our team.
Only Storm and especially Roosters can sign all the good players but that doesn't guarantee a premiership.

Think Gutho doesn't really want to play against us and will stay. In reality we'd be mad to let him go with potentially Drown likely to have full ACL injury and we don't have a reliable replacement and this is where Gutho could slot in.

Btw what positions do we need to strengthen with 3 spots still available? I've got hooker, winger and edge forward (in order of importance) and do we have cap space for rookies or experienced players?

As long as Paulo doesn’t go down I think we are fine in the forwards. Jack Williams will be a revelation for us in the middle rotating with Joffa and we have enough edge forwards that can play both. Matterson and Lane for instance.

We need a winger and I reckon one is coming. If Gutherson leaves I’d be getting another utility which is why we are possibly being linked to Volkman. If we don’t sign a hooker I’d be giving Ryley Smith a crack from the bench.
