Mr MacCallum, a partner at Moloney MacCallum Lawyers, revealed he was representing another player from a different NRL team involved in the incident who he claims was “attacked by a bouncer”.
Mr MacCallum wouldn’t say who that was but the Bulletin understands it is ex-Titan turned Parramatta Eels player Cody Nelson who is 27.
Mr MacCallum said he’d seen the footage which starts with a “heated exchange” between a security guard and his player client who is not Bird.
“The verbal exchange lasts a matter of seconds. This person is surrounded by three security guards.
“A security guard punches and knees this particular person a number of times, the security guard initiates the violence from what I can see,” Mr MacCallum alleged.
“We haven’t ruled out pursuing charges against the security guard.”
Asked about the
Asked last night about the claim a security staffer initiated the physical confrontation, a Hotel Brunswick duty manager said he wouldn’t be commenting as it was a “matter for police”.
The duty manager declined to pass on a contact for the hotel security team.
A person who answered the phone at Hotel Brunswick yesterday said the venue wouldn’t be commenting as the matter was “in police hands”.
Mr MacCallum said the footage showed someone resembling Bird attempting to break it up.
Bird took to Instagram yesterday morning, to put out “the actual version of events from Saturday”.
“I was with a group of people on a bucks party and we all were refused entry.
“I left the premise and someone from our party stayed and got into a physical altercation with security,” Bird wrote.
“Me along with everyone else in the group ran in to separate the two involved and no one else threw any punches. There is footage and witnesses to verify this,” he wrote.
NSW police revealed to the Gold Coast Bulletin yesterday afternoon they were investigating the incident.
“Due to their levels of intoxication the group were asked to leave by security. It will be alleged a brawl broke out between members of the group and security staff.
“The fight occurred after the group continued to remain at the premises despite requests for the group to leave,” police claimed.
“Police will speak to two men, aged 27 and 31, as part of their inquiries.”
Bird’s manager Chris Orr has said his client had no wrongdoing to answer for. Mr Orr declined yesterday to comment in relation to Mr Nelson who he also represents.
An NRL Integrity Unit probe has been launched with the Titans saying Bird is the only club member facing scrutiny.
