I reckon similar happened with Ash Taylor. Halves now unlike years gone past need to have no weaknesses firstly.
This starts with defense. This is also why JA is being given opportunities. He has size. He is 188cm. Listed at 82kgs I dare say he was about 86kgs. Come 2023 he will be around 90kgs. Defense I don't think will be an issue.
If your half can't defend close to the line good attacking sides will score nearly everytime they are on your line. They'll make there set play all about targeting him and sending their best attacking weapons at them.
Second is mentality and attitude. Being able to stick to a game plan, execute under pressure and keep a cool calm head. I feel this is Moses biggest weakness and what seperates him from Nathan Cleary. But Moses is 10x better in his last few seasons that's for sure.
Again JA is pretty good in this department. And only 20.
Unless you can have those things sorted you will only ever get a knock out punch Sandow style halfback who you can never rely on for any consistency.
Of course after that kicking game, passing game and run game have to be serviceable. But first things first. No point wasting time with a guy who is elite in these department's but hopeless in defense and game management. They become a pointless exercise. It's like having a forward who is 95kgs.
JA atleast has a serviceable core to work with. A project player at this stage. But ticks the boxes as someone who atleast has the first two things in his favour.
Ash Taylor or Tim Smith just didn't have the defense or mental attitude to make it. People seem to overlook these thing to often. Professional sport isn't an easy business. Tom Brady is the GOAT not due to his athletic ability. He is the greatest ever based on attitude and mentality.
