Market forces of course and the player manager will always want to do the best for his player and his own pocket.Well the player has to agree to it in the first instance. In this case the player wouldn’t have wanted to sign for the second year at f**k all in case he was killing it before the end of the first year. One year with player option is the compromise between a one and two year contract. Player managers won’t let talented youngsters sign long contracts at minimum salary any more because it removes their potential of a big pay day.
However, how do they serve the club? It’s pure gambling that the player in this case is not good enough to get an offer elsewhere. Or we just end up paying more.
makes sense for the player, but in what way does it benefit the club? You either have a player who doesn’t take up his option because he will get more money elsewhere, or the player has not developed and therefore takes up the offer. Either way the club is being bent over
