He’s not in the top 30 straight away but he has been given a contract promising top 30. We’ve done the same but the players have at least turned 18 before being promised a top 30 spot a year later.

I don’t think it would be enforceable if a child signed a contract with Parramatta either. I’m not criticising the Tigers here, I’m pointing out a potential risk with this contract. I’m sure the Tigers are aware of it, but are their fans?

No doubt a similar legal principle to how 17 year olds can join the ADF. However it’s also much easier for them to back out of the ADF before they turn 18.

Don't forget the Tigers are in a very different position to other clubs. You got a good young kid coming through, as the Tigers, you're going to have to pay more to keep them

You also HAVE to spend most of the money the NRL gives you. So rather than pay journeymen, fill up the end of top30 with kids and see if they have anything. Essentially you need to find a core group to build around - once you find them, time to be smarter with the cap


For mine I would always be giving out a handful of 3 year deals at least somewhat similar to what the Tigers are offering this kid, going from dev through to top 30 by the end of it

Fifteen of seventeen NRL clubs are doing this. Only the Sharks and Cowboys don’t have players on contract who will move into the top 30 in future years, at least according to this: https://www.nrl.com/news/2024/01/01...r-latest-signings-news-contracts-and-details/

Lachlan Galvin was the same and it worked well. Luke Laulilii dev Contract before 18 and has played first grade. Heath mason same.

Galvin has never played a game in Flegg or NSW Cup.

Its literally how all Development Contracts work....like the Parra Development Contract with Saxon Pryke

I'm just saying he is in discussions of GOAT ( not there yet) and a huge part of the reason Penrith are strong. Had Gus not arrived Nathan still would have made the Panthers strong

Ivan Cleary is a great, great coach - but I suspect that Nathan would still be a brilliant player under another coach.

That said - I have had dreams whereby we have snagged Ivan, and Nathan, in a package deal.
