Hindsight is a funny thing.
It's easy to say that we all knoew that Cleary would be the player he is now after we've seen it happen. He wasn't this player 5 years ago. He was a good halfback. Better than Robson was, but I could see where the comparison came from.

Merkins on here love their hindsight. Chris Sandow's signing was celebrated on here when we got him (not by me) but now eveyone says that he was always terrible.

Apparently we should have known that Foran was going to turn out to be a shit signing, despite it being lauded as the best signing we had done in years when he came over from Manly.

It's since been reported that Forans issues were well known within his club and one could reasonably assume that that knowledge was known to their assistant coach.

It hasn’t stopped four other clubs from signing him after he left, including Manly who presumably knew all about his ‘issues’.

It could also be assumed that Coach wanted his man right or wrong even if it meant paying mega bucks and a get out clause, with payment, every year of his contract.
And let's not forget the other Manly bloke who was as shot as Hodgson when he arrived.

We don’t know how much we paid. In any case it didn’t matter because we had plenty of funds to throw around outside the cap. We had a great side in 2016. We obviously weren’t paying too much under the cap for any of them.

Robson was a first grader with a lot more experience than Cleary. Yes Cleary was special, because he was a first grader by the age of 19. He kicked and tackled well above his years, which is why he was picked in Origin at 21. Everyone knew he would improve. It’s the same with Talagi. He has flaws in his game, as you’d expect from a teenager, but he is so good at running the ball already, most merkins know he’ll be great eventually.
